Adrian recognized Laila’s handwriting instantly, though he’d seen it only once before. This note had been left by her.

She must have been rushed from every side on her way here, and yet she’d still taken the time to leave this message—he even felt gratitude toward her for it.

However, if anyone else had noticed that the drawer was slightly ajar, it could have ended badly.

‘Since no one found out, she must have slipped it in right before I came in.’

With that thought lightly crossing his mind, Adrian read the brief note over and over, pondering how he might secretly see her that evening.

Just then, a sharp knock came from behind him. It was likely Rilvan. As expected, his voice followed immediately.

“Your Highness, it’s me—Rilvan.”

“Come in.”

The moment Rilvan opened the door, he bowed his head. Through the widening crack behind him, Adrian caught a glimpse of the count’s servants bustling about.

Without a word from Adrian, Rilvan stepped in with practiced ease and shut the door right away.

“Any new developments?”

Rilvan spoke in a casual tone, indicating it wasn’t anything serious.

“A detachment of the Royal Knights arrived from the palace shortly after we got here. They claim it’s for protection, but they’ll be stationed in shifts inside and outside the mansion for as long as we stay.”

This was well within expected bounds. Still, the fact that they weren’t even trying to hide their surveillance was almost laughable.

Adrian scoffed. “The count must be having a rough time.”
