Fearlessly (Completed Main Story) - Chapter 11
“What is this?”
At the voice coming from behind him, Gerard spun around irritably, making the wineglass in his hand slosh.
“A portal permit.”
The man seated before the reception table swept back his red hair and smiled.
“I was under the impression that these couldn’t be issued to outsiders—yet here the Emperor is openly breaking the law.”
Gerard took a sip of wine and chuckled.
“I am the law of this nation—calling it illegal? How absurd.”
“So the Emperor has abolished Periat’s laws.”
“Precisely.”
“Indeed. The more I learn about this empire, the more astonishing it becomes.”
Though his words seemed sarcastic, his tone remained respectful, so Gerard laughed boisterously without a hint of tact.
The man seated opposite him possessed unusual hair and eyes tinged with red, unlike most inhabitants of the Periat Empire.
“Even if the war has ended, is there anything more astonishing than a prince who keeps crossing the border like a thief?”
The red-haired man laughed heartily as well.
“I didn’t cross like a thief.”
“Oh?”
The red-haired man leaned across the table, pressing his handsome face close to Gerard’s.
His manner was brazen, as if he’d tossed any respect for the Emperor to the dogs.
“I crossed with the grace befitting a prince of the Deranthis Empire, Your Imperial Majesty.”
Gerard frowned, then quickly gave in, breaking into an unrestrained laugh.
Before coming here, the words of his consort Lione came to mind.
“Beware that red-haired prince, Your Imperial Majesty. Something about him feels… off.”
Off, indeed.
Lione was a flawless woman as a consort, yet she had one flaw:
She understood people far too poorly.
“How naive.”
The Deranthis Empire, one of the Three Continents, enjoyed the protection of the Sea God.
Prince Loren, born into the royal family where heirs were especially scarce, was adored by everyone—nobles and commoners alike.
Partly because he was the sole heir to the imperial throne, and partly because of
that lustrous, flowing red hair.
That was precisely why Loren was so beloved.
The people of Deranthis believed that red hair was a sign of communion with Velophae, the Sea God.
A human linked to the divine.
That such a mysterious being should be born as the empire’s prince naturally drove everyone wild with admiration.
How could such a Loren possibly give off an “off” feeling?
“I heard Princess Kelita departed through the portal today. Would it be alright if you granted me this permit?”
“That’s not what matters—now hand over what you promised.”
“Oh dear. My apologies for my lack of tact, Your Imperial Majesty.”
Loren pulled a large purple Labrato from his robes and placed it on the table.
“So this is the famed Whale’s Tear.”
Gerard gazed at the gemstone with greedy eyes.
At the sight, Loren swept back his luxuriant hair, which fell past his shoulders, and smiled.
While Gerard let his guard down, Loren would surely become the most dangerous figure across the Three Continents.
But that was still far off.
“Aul. Come here.”
When Loren extended his hand, the lizard, which had been noisily munching on sweets from a plate, hurriedly climbed onto his arm.
Seeing the lizard flick its long tongue, Gerard frowned and stood up.
“Do whatever you like with the portal permit—use it or eat it—and leave already. I need to rest now.”
He added a quick eyebrow twitch toward Loren, as if urging him to hurry out.
Loren shrugged helplessly, lifting then lowering the shoulder where the lizard perched.

He placed a hand over his chest and bowed with clean, unembellished grace.
“Your Imperial Majesty of the Periat Empire—may your night be peaceful.”
“Oh, right.”
Loren, who had turned to leave, looked back at Gerard once more.
Gerard grinned slyly and said,
“Don’t lose that permit. Without it, your body will shatter to pieces if you enter the portal.”
Loren, too, stretched his charming lips into a smile.
“Of course, Your Imperial Majesty.”
Striding out, he walked leisurely down the dim corridor.
Suddenly, he burst into quiet laughter.
“Philistine.”
The lizard on his shoulder opened its mouth and flicked its tongue as if laughing too.
Loren shifted his red eyes thoughtfully for a moment, then covered his mouth and whispered something to the lizard.
Gerard always acted as though he knew everything happening in Periat—but in truth, he knew nothing.
Why Loren crossed the border to visit this empire.
What he was desperately waiting for beneath that seemingly carefree demeanor.
“Aul. They say the Awakened Ones of Bercheria are always born with blindingly beautiful appearances, don’t they?”
Loren stroked Aul’s green head with the tip of his index finger.
“I wish to meet her as soon as possible.”
Beneath those red eyes, his handsome lips curved into a graceful arc.
“My Bercheria.”
The gods who guarded the continents each possessed their own unique divine artifact.
They never parted with their artifact.
The artifact, imbued with special power, restrained their strength from running wild and prevented the Awakened One from being consumed by power.
It was precisely because of the artifact that a human body could endure divine power.
In other words, if the artifact vanished, the Awakened One bearing divine power would go mad—and the continent they protected would be ruined as well.
“Could it be…”
Lakrahan asked in disbelief.
“Are you telling me you’ve lost your staff?”
Bercheria slowly shook her head at Lakrahan’s question.
“If you know where it is, you can’t say it’s lost.”
Bercheria placed her hand against the tower wall.
“The staff is right here.”
“…What?”
Lakrahan’s brow furrowed.
“Could this tower possibly…”
“Yes. This tower is Bercheria’s staff—and the hidden divine artifact.”
His red lips parted slightly.
“To have been right before my eyes and not known…”
Though divine artifacts could change form as needed, and thus their true nature remained largely unknown to humans, there was one exception.
Bercheria’s staff was known to all.
As the Goddess of Weather, Bercheria wielded the strongest power among the gods, so her artifact reportedly never changed form except in extraordinary circumstances.
More accurately, it couldn’t change form.
If she continued using her abilities without the staff, Bercheria would be consumed by power and driven mad faster than any other god.
For this reason, the staff was far more symbolic to Bercheria than any other god’s artifact.
“How could you live without your staff?”
“To be precise, I didn’t live without it. It was always with me.”
“So it was a true prison, then.”
“And one more thing.”
Bercheria walked slowly and stood before Lakrahan.

“While staying here, I gradually lost my strength.”
“What do you mean by losing strength?”
“Because I was born as a divine Awakened One, I matured mentally faster than humans. I understand the ways of the world and how people live—even without observing them.”
Everything came to her naturally, without needing to be taught.
Even though her body had been confined within this stifling, filthy tower.
“That’s why I understand my own abilities well. But year after year, I couldn’t stop my powers from fading.”
“…Was this your mother’s doing?”
“I’m not entirely certain yet.”
She couldn’t reveal everything to Lakrahan just yet—so she spoke partially, concealed partially.
Though she couldn’t bring herself to lie outright, her answer remained ambiguous.
“When I escaped this tower, I never intended to return. Or if I did, I thought it would be in the very distant future.”
It had been a moment of decision.
Whether to remain imprisoned here and live on, or step outside and end her short life.
“Then why have you returned now?”
“A variable appeared.”
“A variable?”
“Yes. I met you.”
Lakrahan blinked his deep, dark eyes, clearly puzzled.
“Am I the variable?”
“Yes.”
He couldn’t grasp what she meant.
Though he couldn’t follow her reasoning at all, his heart beat for no reason.
Fresh air blew into the tower.
The wind that tousled her golden hair then ruffled his own.
It felt as if their fates were tightly intertwining.
The sensation of holding her when she first collapsed returned to his fingertips.
Her frail body and limp golden hair.
Those mysterious eyes, narrowed faintly.
“Lakrahan. When I’m with you, my lost abilities return.”
This was utterly unexpected.
“Just by being near me, your powers come back?”
“I don’t understand how it works either—why you, or whether it would work with someone else. But this much is certain.”
Bercheria stepped closer, narrowing the distance between them.
Their faces nearly touched, and her scent washed over him intensely.
“That I’ve revealed all my secrets to you.”
“Wait a moment, Bercheria…”
“What I mean is…”
Bercheria cut him off.
When she descended from this tower, she’d been filled with selfishness.
She’d only wanted to escape, to be free.
But after meeting the children and slowly regaining her strength through Lakrahan, she began to realize who she truly was.
I am Bercheria, born by the Supreme God’s design—nothing in this world happens by mere chance.
My power returning through Lakrahan, my escape from the tower—
Though she didn’t yet understand what these tangled coincidences were trying to convey, one thing was clear.
Now was the time for Bercheria to act.
She couldn’t afford to let these opportunities slip away.
Perhaps the Supreme God was testing her one final time.
Thus, Bercheria resolved to do everything in her power to reclaim her artifact.
“Lakrahan. There’s only one thing I want.”
“…Tell me.”

No matter what it was.
No matter what sacrifice it required.
Bercheria had to focus on regaining her strength.
“We must stay together—until I’ve recovered all my lost abilities.”
At her unwavering words, Lakrahan clenched his fist so tightly that veins stood out on his knuckles.
Her calm, golden eyes seemed to pierce straight through to his deepest core.
“My offer has remained unchanged from the start. Don’t leave my side for even a moment, Lakrahan.”
Indescribable feelings slowly rose within him.

I have a inkling that Lione is probably Berche’s ‘Mother’?
