“What are you talking about…?”

Dia’s head shot up at Zen’s indifferent voice.

Zen raised one eyebrow and spoke clearly.

“So you seem to think I’m unhappy about your attending the reading, but you’re mistaken.”

Zen’s gaze was sharp. Yet, strangely, Dia wasn’t afraid to meet his eyes.

“If I’d disapproved, I would’ve stopped you from the start.”

Dia recalled asking Cedric whether it was alright for her to attend. At the time, Cedric had clearly said yes.

“Mr. Rareford wouldn’t have given that answer without Mr. Baker’s permission.”

Dia knew that, too. But reluctantly granting permission was different from genuinely approving.

“I don’t want to cause you any inconvenience at all. Honestly, it can’t be pleasant for you, Mr. Baker, to see me interacting with other people.”

If Dia were as eloquent and clever as Deborah, it might be different—she could perhaps be helpful. But right now, Dia was barely managing to hide her inadequacies.

“Thankfully, my appearance at the party was brief and went fine, but I’ll surely make a mistake at the reading. That would tarnish Mr. Baker’s reputation…”

“It doesn’t matter.”

Zen’s firm voice swept in like the tide, cutting off Dia’s spiraling doubts.

“Certainly, I’ll avoid putting us in situations that could cause trouble.”
