It was the spring when Zen turned eighteen. Spring in Astrion was so warm it often felt outright hot.

Born in a cold land yet hating the cold more than anyone, Zen actually preferred that heat.

At the time, Zen lived in the warmest place in all of Astrion.

No common houses were visible anywhere around him—only an endless expanse of green leaves.

Ordinary people would have been enchanted by such beautiful scenery, only to grow bored soon after, for its unchanging nature.

But Zen was neither enchanted nor bored. Scenery was just scenery, after all.

The mansion Zen lived in was so grand it seemed almost absurdly placed in such an empty plain, and it was packed floor to ceiling with books—as if someone had collected every book in the world.

Honestly, it resembled a library more than a home.

“This mansion was designed from the start to store books. You see, books are far heavier than you might think.”

Lady Saint ran her hand over one of the unusually thick pillars, comparing it to other mansions.

“…This is what I wanted to give you.”

Lady Saint smiled gently. Then, as though following someone’s movement, she slowly turned her gaze.

Her clear eyes shimmered dazzlingly like the morning sea—though there was nothing but empty air where her eyes landed.

Zen had no interest in knowing to whom Lady Saint had wanted to give this mansion.

He wasn’t curious then, and he doubted he ever would be.
