A presence she had momentarily forgotten made an appearance. Deborah’s pupils trembled faintly, yet neither Irene—who had spoken—nor Dia—who had been listening intently—realized Deborah was flustered.

At least within this room, Deborah alone knew the truth that Zen was Duke Verrain’s illegitimate child.

“I should be careful not to act awkwardly myself.”

Deborah composed her expression once more.

“These days, compositions by composers from Geman are quite fashionable…”

Irene added a deeply thoughtful explanation lasting about a minute. Had she not noticed the beads of cold sweat forming on Dia’s forehead, she likely would have continued even longer.

Clearing her throat to lighten the mood, Irene continued.

Dia replied cautiously. Irene smiled contentedly.

“Yes. That is indeed Yates’s most famous song. In the sonata I’m about to play for you, there’s a motif borrowed from ‘My Beautiful Homeland,’ so it’ll be fun to listen for it.”

Having said that, Irene bowed slightly beside the piano. Deborah offered a small round of applause, and Dia—startled by the sound—quickly joined in.
