Zen’s night felt both long and short. By the time he finished handling a few matters, morning had already arrived.

Yet tonight felt short yet somehow long.

He could not possibly understand how Deborah had lived, from just a few muttered words.

But he could at least guess roughly what had happened.

Right after Deborah left, the boy kept thinking: Why did you disappear?

It wasn’t as if she had simply vanished—no one even claimed to know her. Had the boy been dreaming for the past few months? If so, when had the dream begun? Was it when she looked at him with those clear, beautiful black eyes, brighter than the yellow candy lying forgotten on the floor? Or had it begun earlier, when she grabbed his messy hand and ran wildly with him?

“That’s impossible.”

People create dreams from the emotions and experiences within themselves. Zen had always had unpleasant dreams.

How could someone like Zen—who only ever dreamed dreams better left undreamt—possibly conjure up something so happy?

Deborah had thought the boy would resent her, but she was wrong. The boy was worried about her.

Why had that foolishly kind person vanished on such a cold day? Was she even safe?

Frankly, the boy—Zen—couldn’t resent her even if she had left thinking nothing of him.

Perhaps the problem lay with him, for failing to become someone important to Deborah.

Zen had searched for Deborah purely because he missed her. He missed her so terribly—so unbearably—he felt he might die from it.

“But you said you could endure because of me?”
