When the whiskey-scented empty glass was filled again with golden liquor, it was then that Eric broached a subject.

“Belrus. Have you ever heard of Jen Baker?”

Eric asked cautiously, gauging Belrus’s reaction. Belrus raised both eyebrows and rolled his eyes.

“Hmm? Jen Baker? I wonder. Was there a Baker family? What’s his origin? Any titles?”

“He’s a bourgeois from Astrian.”

At Derek’s words, Belrus, who had been indifferent, suddenly showed a flicker of curiosity in his eyes. It was more like the look of a young predator eyeing its prey than one of pure interest.

‘Hmm?’

Certainly, there were a few bourgeois among the club members. John, Eric, and Derek, always jovial, told the bourgeois that within this club, everyone was friends. But in reality, there was a great divide between them.

‘Honestly, John’s family, the Powell baronets, are in a precarious state financially. They’re hardly ahead of the bourgeois members of this club. Yet John still boasts his high status just because he’s a noble.’

It was odd that these prideful men were paying attention to a bourgeois.

‘Aha, interesting. This could be fun.’

Feeling as if a sweet candy was rolling around in his mouth, Belrus asked with a smile.

“So? What about Jen Baker? What kind of character is he?”

Deborah trusted Jen’s word that he would move her room.

Jen might not have the nicest personality, but his credibility was high. After all, he always kept his word.

So, when Jen came to Deborah the next day saying, “Follow me. I’ll take you to the new room you wanted,” she wasn’t surprised.

‘He really doesn’t sugarcoat his words. And he didn’t need to guide me personally.’

Normally, other servants would have done the job.

Nevertheless, Deborah was grateful to be moving out of her current room. It was so spacious that it felt oppressive just sitting there.

‘I wonder what the servant quarters are like. The mansion is so grand; it might be better than I expect. Oh, will I have a room to myself?’

Most servants shared a room, but Deborah wasn’t an ordinary maid, so she might have one to herself.

‘Even if I have my own room, I’ll probably meet people in the hallway, right? Should I ask Shelly to introduce me to others?’

Engrossed in her thoughts, Deborah cheerfully followed Jen. However, her pleasant musings turned to ashes the moment she saw the door they arrived at.

“This won’t do.”

As soon as Jen stopped, Deborah firmly objected.

“The door isn’t even open yet.”

“I know it just by looking at this door. It won’t do.”

The door in front of Deborah was much larger and more ornate than the one to her previous room. A room with such a door couldn’t possibly be modest.

“That’s absurd.”

Saying so, Jen didn’t hesitate to open the door. A warm burst of air greeted them, as if the fireplace had been lit in advance.

‘What is this?’

The room awaiting Deborah was magnificent. A wide window that seemed to capture the sky, an especially high ceiling befitting the top-floor room, and the furniture. Although not as flashy as her previous room, it was more dignified and elegant.

A servant couldn’t possibly stay in such a room.

‘Of course, it won’t do!’

Jen glanced sideways, observing Deborah’s demeanor.

Her hands were clasped in front, standing upright in a neat posture. Her face held a faint smile. At first glance, she seemed normal, but upon closer inspection, her clear eyes were frantically darting around.

Jen almost laughed but spoke sternly instead.

“This is the room next to the person you’ve been so concerned about.”

“That means, you’re offering me the room next to Mrs. Baker?”

Jen’s face, usually marked by a characteristic arrogant smile, turned icy in an instant.

“Mrs. Baker?”
At the moment when the whiskey-scented empty glass was refilled with golden liquid, Deborah realized her slip-up. The room intended for Dia was indeed for the future lady of the house, but the two were not yet married.

“It’s unpleasant to use such a title before they’re even married,” Jen said, frowning and brushing back his hair. Deborah quickly replied, “I apologize. However, it’s unreasonable for me to use the room next to Countess Blythe.”

“Why not? It’s a room where you can quickly respond to her call. Wouldn’t that make your work easier?”

“Ordinary servants don’t stay in such rooms. Even the maids of noble ladies…”

“Again with the rules of other households. I’ve told you, I make the rules here.”

Deborah had never won against Jen Baker. Just yesterday, he forcefully took away the chocolate box. Naturally, an employer can’t lose to an employee, but how could she accept this situation?

So, Deborah decided to take a strong stance. “Mr. Baker, I apologize, but this might lead to unpleasant rumors.”

He appeared relaxed. He probably knew what Deborah meant, yet he asked this way.
