Ian kicked Belzebuth, who shuddered with a sharp chill. After a few chaotic rolls and grapples, Ian’s fist sank heavily into Belzebuth’s jaw.

“Ugh!”

Belzebuth slid across the ground as if nearly launched airborne, and Ian seized the opening to hurriedly check on Odyssey.

“Stay sharp. Don’t close your eyes.”

Odyssey weakly nodded, then his eyes suddenly widened. His gaze shifted past Ian’s shoulder. Following his look, Ian saw Belzebuth struggling back to his feet, dragging his sword toward them.

Ian scrambled to find his own blade. Belzebuth’s pace quickened. Before Ian could properly grip his sword, Belzebuth raised his weapon high. A single, desperate cry tore from Odyssey’s throat.

Yet a new sword hilt came between them. Beneath it, lines woven in Heidi’s distinctive sigil gleamed brightly.

“You’re…”

Her tightly bound red hair came undone, scattering in the air. Belzebuth’s eyes swept over Helena beyond the clashing blades.

“I’d heard you were the sort who wallowed on the ground. Quite different from what I imagined.”

Helena kept her eyes locked on him and called back without turning her head.

“Get Odyssey to the rear first. I can hold out that long.”

Ian hesitated for just an instant before scooping up Odyssey and carrying him toward a stretcher. Belzebuth scoffed, then intensified his pressure, drawing Helena’s full attention.

“Still, you’ve got no eye for quality, have you? If you were going to choose a fool like that, at least gauge your moment properly before cutting in.”

“—Seemed easy enough to gauge.”
