Even if his help had been minimal, the sin of aiding Helena’s escape was grave.

As Helena vanished before his eyes, unconscious, Walter had to bear the full brunt of Eugene’s wrath.

To him, Walter was no longer a trustworthy knight—merely an obstacle blocking his will.

“If there’s a next time, do hope you understand your place better. You’ve done well, Sir.”

Eugene departed, giving a hint of future promise. But Walter sensed it.

Walter clutched the spot where Eugene had stabbed him and gasped for breath. No matter how hard he tried to draw air into his lungs, all he produced was the sound of a deflated bellows.

His head felt numb from the forceful impact against the wall. Judging by the slick sensation trailing down his brow, his skin must have torn open.

Through his rapidly blurring vision, Walter gazed at the door through which Helena had fled—a door glowing white, as if unfolding the staircase to heaven beyond.

If only I were granted that chance, despite failing to protect my wife and daughter… and even losing the Lady.

His vision blurred further into whiteness. Shamelessly, Walter blinked, hoping his daughter would be waiting to greet him. He heard footsteps drawing nearer.

But the figure who appeared through the door with the light was one who would force him to confront an even crueller reality.
