“Is your room all right? Is there anything uncomfortable?”

In the space left to just the two of them, Helena quietly nodded.

The one who had come to see her was Aida. A familiar face she’d encountered by chance after leaving Evergale. Though glad to see her, Helena also felt uneasy, and she stared deeply at Aida as if asking for the reason behind her visit.

Aida lowered her head, avoiding Helena’s gaze, and bit her lip.

“I came to thank you. I thought you’d completely forgotten someone like me… yet the moment you returned, you wrote me a recommendation letter for the hotel, and you’ve looked after my mother and little brother too… I’m truly grateful for everything.”

“You didn’t need to come just for that. I did it only to ease my guilt toward my younger sister… It’s… embarrassing, honestly.”

“It doesn’t matter.”

Aida blurted out abruptly. Helena’s eyes widened in surprise. Aida herself seemed taken aback by her own outburst and, after showing a flustered expression, continued speaking.

“Do you know? Thanks to you, madam, my mother no longer lies confined to her bed all day. And Tom now holds a pen instead of a broom. He says he wants to become a doctor. It’s because of you that our family finally has dreams.”

As if recalling her brother’s face, Aida lifted her gaze toward the ceiling. Just as she’d said, her expression truly seemed full of dreams.

“So I’ve finally decided to repay you somehow. Please accept this.”

As if her dream had ended, she quickly forced a bitter smile and pulled a small wooden box from her bag, offering it to Helena.

Helena, puzzled, took the box and carefully opened the lid. Inside lay a vial containing an opaque liquid, no longer than a finger.

“Lady Christine gave this to me during the trial and told me to have you take it. They’ve recently developed a method to collect fingerprints as evidence, so this should help.”
