“I will save you.”
“You killed me. Killed me.”
Helena obsessively repeated.
“You killed me again, in the most miserable way, unbearably miserable!”
Suddenly, a thunderous boom and crash echoed, casting a deep shadow in the room like a scream. A lightning flash was followed by the oil lamp snuffing out.
Darkness engulfed the room instantly.
Only the sound of feverish, heavy breathing intermittently echoed. Her heart was so loud, as if it had moved next to her ear.
Thump, thump, thump. It sounded like someone pounding on the door.
In a void of complete solitude, an unknown heartbeat whispered to her.
Just leave me. Go away as if nothing happened.
Let me hate the world without hesitation, abandon me again without second thoughts.
Just go.
Helena blinked slowly until her eyes adjusted to the darkness. Her small shoulders, which had been heaving with breath, gradually calmed down. By then, her head had cooled off.
The strength slowly drained from Helena’s grip on Ian’s clothes. She released a breath, filled with a desperate wish.
“Please, just leave.”
Helena hoped he would simply turn and leave the room. She wanted her outburst to have hurt him enough to make him go.
She desired him to leave because she was ungrateful and irredeemable.
Not because he was tired of her, not out of disgust.
But from the moment they met until now, he never once did what she wanted.
His large hand moved up her arm, caressing gently as if soothing her with his warmth, and stopped at her wrist.
“I’m not used to losing someone important. Even if it happens tens, hundreds of times, I will never get used to it.”
He carefully disengaged her hand from his clothing and met her gaze.
Then, he gently rubbed her whitened finger joints with his thumb. As always, too tender, Helena thought.
“Just as your longing is death, this is my longing. So, even if this makes you hate me for the rest of your life, I will save you again and again. It may be an obsession with avoiding loss, but I can’t help it.”
Helena felt a faint tremble through her captured wrist.
After a pause, Ian continued.
“I want you to live till the very end.”
Even in the darkness, his violet eyes were vivid, fixed only on her.
That’s why Helena turned her head away. She didn’t want to know a man who looked at her with those eyes, spoke with that voice, said those words. She had to remain ignorant.
But why?
“Why does it feel so longing?”
Helena pulled away from him, creating a small space between them with just one step.
Only after confirming she could stand on her own did Ian release her wrist.
Now free, Helena reflexively clasped her hands together, as if to hold on to the warmth from his large palm.
She spoke, trying to maintain her composure.
“Alright. I’ll just consider myself unlucky to have been caught by someone as meddling as you. But I’m not one of your precious people. Or is your sense of preciousness so light that it arises from a first encounter?”
Ian remained silent for a while.
Despite not looking up, Helena could feel his piercing gaze on her. The silence stretched on, and without any intention to wait, she moved past him towards the door.
But just as she opened the door slightly, a thick wooden panel slammed shut with a loud bang.
Behind her, she sensed a heavy presence. A hand with bulging veins was pressing against the door.
“Don’t push yourself,” he said, seemingly a bit angry now.
She was equally angry. Helena immediately turned to face him.
“Just because my anger has subsided doesn’t mean I want to be with you. You may not hate me, but I still hate you.”
“Just follow the doctor’s advice. It won’t hurt.”
“What right do you have?”
“If you really want to know, I can say I’m your temporary guardian.”
“Seems like you have a hobby of seeking out trouble.”
“……Because you did the same.”
Again, and again.
Helena inwardly groaned.
It was imperceptible, but during their conversation, he kept making that expression intermittently.
An emotion he couldn’t suppress, no matter how hard he tried, seeping through.
It was something that couldn’t simply be explained with a few words. Ignoring it seemed like the only answer.
‘Or perhaps, confronting it head-on.’
Swallowing hard, Helena felt the dryness in her throat.
When male lead is the homewrecker
“I know she doesn’t love him.”
I’ve read the novel below twice already. Girls, I’m highly recommending it to you!
The female lead? Not a good person.
The second male lead? Not a good person.
The male lead? Willingly plays the third party, breaking up the female and second male lead’s relationship despite all the warnings from his friends—so yeah, he’s definitely not a good person either.
Basically, nobody in this novel is simple-minded or without scheming.
The female lead starts off as the male lead’s secretary, but don’t worry—later on, she takes over the company while the male lead steps back to support her. He won’t steal her spotlight, overshadow her, or dull her shine.
I love novels where men are out here snatching wigs, tearing each other down, and going to war just to win the female lead’s affection. And this is exactly that kind of novel. Most of Hai Dai Ran’s works have this dynamic. You’ll see the male characters’ emotions being pushed to the absolute extreme.
There’s even a scene where the second male lead exposes the male lead online for being a homewrecker. The brotherhood immediately gangs up on him, dragging him through the mud. I find it compelling —it completely flips reality on its head, where usually, women are the ones fighting over a man and getting torn apart by the sisterhood.
For me, female leads in the novels I read should only struggle in their careers, not in love. But if the brainless romantics in the story are all men? I have zero complaints.
I’ve pretty much read all of Hai Dai Ran’s novels and even translated all of them—her works are just my thing. I’ll slowly upload everything here. One day, when my website is official, I hope I can invite her to join as one of the star authors.
