The night wind fiercely rattled the cabin window as it passed by. Startled by the sound, Diana jolted awake from a light slumber.

It was still before dawn. Diana burrowed into the wide, warm embrace to escape the chill of the early morning air.

“Your eyes are all puffy.”

Diana whispered softly as she gently stroked Raoul’s eyes. Then, pressing her lips against his rapidly beating chest, she murmured,

“I told our baby to forgive you for Daddy… He’ll do it willingly. He was such an incredibly kind child.”

Diana smiled faintly as she thought of her child.

“He never whined for food at dawn, and he never kicked in his sleep to wake us up. Only when I felt down would he let me know he was there—just twice, gently tapping my belly like a little knock. You probably wouldn’t understand how adorably ticklish those tiny movements were.”

She slowly traced her thumbnail across his chest, then lightly nuzzled her nose against his left shoulder.

“It still aches to think of him… But now, I think I can finally let him go. Because our child would want me to be happy.”

Diana closed her eyes and tried to drift back to sleep.

The secluded, unused cabin was quiet and cozy. Only their steady breathing peacefully filled the space between them, and worries or anxieties had long been forgotten.

The moment Diana fell asleep, Raoul’s eyelids silently lifted.

Moonlight seeped into his still eyes, deepening their already melancholic hue into something even more distant.

He gazed down at the face in his arms, then pressed a kiss to her forehead.
