“They were all innocent people—the baker, a man who worked as a guard, farmers, and so on. If I had to find a common thread, it’s only that they openly spoke in support of Lord Idrish.”

“So it’s a warning, then. A warning that anyone who supports Idrish will meet this fate.”

I bit my lip hard.

These people had died merely as examples. How much they must have suffered before death was easily guessed from the deep, unrelenting wrinkles etched into their foreheads.

Idrish broke the silence that had briefly settled over us.
