As I stood there scanning the area for a while, Idrish pulled my arm closer.
“Did you find her?”
He asked with a serious frown, his eyes—visible through the mask’s eyeholes—drawing a faint curve.
Why are you smiling in such a serious situation?
But before my thoughts could wander further, Idrish lowered his head and whispered,
“I found her. She’s over there.”
Idrish pointed with his chin toward a corner.
There stood a woman in a dress as red as blood. Though she wore a mask, her tall stature, lavish jewelry, and that unnerving smile! I instantly recognized her as Merien.
She was surrounded by several nobles.
I swallowed hard. Seeing her brought back vivid memories of her shoving lemon muffins into her mouth and flailing helplessly in the water.
Idrish steadied me. He leaned down until his eyes met mine closely. Through the mask, his eyes looked strikingly like my own.
“This time, I’ll handle it myself. You stay back.”
Idrish said calmly. I nodded.
I untangled my arm and moved first toward where Merien stood. I took a position behind her—close enough to hear loud voices, if not quiet ones.
I picked up a wineglass I had no intention of drinking from and watched Merien.
