The priest, whose heart had been pierced, collapsed toward Irene, drenching her dress in blood. Of all colors, her dress was silver, making the crimson blood stand out vividly.

Her wide golden eyes trembled uselessly. Irene covered her mouth with both hands and staggered backward.

But she couldn’t retreat far before bumping into something behind her, forcing her to stop.

“…!”

Irene turned around in even greater shock than when she’d seen the priest’s heart pierced. The first thing she saw was a broad pair of shoulders. Raising her gaze further, she met Carlos’s expressionless face.

Could he possibly have overheard everything the priest and I just said?

Is that why he killed the priest? Because the priest had offered to help me escape…?

“What were you doing here with that pigeon?”

Since he was asking this, it seemed that wasn’t the case. Irene breathed a deep sigh of relief but simultaneously worried about what to say.

Telling the truth felt risky—Carlos might misunderstand in a strange way.

And if this incident made him watch her even more closely, escaping would become utterly impossible, so she hesitated even more about speaking honestly.

“Why are you silent?”

As the silence stretched, his suspicious gaze deepened, leaving Irene no choice but to open her mouth.

“I was on my way back to my room when that priest suddenly appeared…and said he had something to tell me, asking if we could talk for just a moment.”

So far, that was the truth.
