Carlos’s attitude towards the witch was surprising, even introducing himself, but the more surprising thing was the declaration that followed.

“I will take her with me.”

Baron Silas looked displeased.

“I understand that you want to play with the witch, but this witch has already been reported to the temple. If you take her, my position will become awkward…….”

Carlos silently handed over a check. The conspicuously stamped seal of Duke Esper was noticeable, but what caught the baron’s eye was the amount.

Thirty thousand gold.

The temple did give a reward for capturing a witch, but it was a mere three hundred gold.

Baron Silas’s eyes widened at the fact that a hundred times more was being offered.

Unable to take his eyes off the check, a cold voice fell above his head.

“What will you do?”

It was a ridiculous question that needed no consideration.

“I will prepare right away.”

He could tell the people of the territory that it was a false report to the temple.

The temple might complain that they hadn’t properly checked, but it didn’t matter.

Thirty thousand gold was more precious than the temple’s nagging.

Baron Silas put the check in his inner pocket with a secret, pleased smile.

What on earth had happened?

Irene, who couldn’t adapt to the rapidly changing situation, sat huddled in the corner of the carriage, blinking slowly.

The carriage, which she rode for the first time in her life, was fascinating, but there was no time to be immersed in admiration. Being put on the carriage meant that she was being taken somewhere.

That man had also said he would take her with him.

She didn’t know where he was taking her, but she was sure it wasn’t a good place.

……Maybe he would enjoy himself and then kill her.

The heart that had been relieved to live for a moment thumped again.

‘Shall I run away now?’

Irene’s eyes reached the door.

Could she escape if she opened that door?

What if she failed? Then she would be severely beaten…….

Having experienced it once before, she knew how painful it was.

As she was unable to easily escape and was hesitating, the carriage door opened and Carlos climbed in.

Losing her chance to escape, Irene gave up her thoughts.

A man she had never seen before also climbed into the carriage.

The man, wearing dark blue clothes matching his hair color and a long silver chain monocle, put his hand to his chest and bowed to Irene.

“Nice to meet you, Miss.”

Irene’s cheeks turned slightly red at the unfamiliar and courteous address she had never heard before.

“I am a humble servant who serves His Highness, called Dewey Limon. You can call me Dewey.”

“My name is Irene.”

Her voice was still small, but it didn’t tremble as much as when she spoke to Carlos.

Dewey was not as scary as Carlos.

Carlos sat across from Irene, and Dewey sat next to her.

“Here.”

No, he was about to sit down, but Carlos blocked him.

“Your seat is here.”

Dewey had never sat in the same place as Carlos.

But he smiled, understanding why he was doing this, though he was also startled.

“I understand.”

Having taken his seat, Dewey took out a pen and notebook and said to Irene,

“I’m going to ask you about yourself from now on, but if it makes you uncomfortable, you don’t have to answer.”

Irene nodded her head in agreement.

“How old are you this year?”

“I’m 20 years old.”

“What?”

Dewey, who was about to take a note, looked back at Irene in surprise.

Carlos, too, seemed surprised, opening his eyes that were slightly closed and staring at her.

“Are you really 20 years old?”

“Yes.”

“An adult, right?”

As Irene nodded her head again, Dewey let out a hollow laugh.

He had thought she looked around 15 or 16 years old, but she was an adult.

“It’s always been hard to gauge humans’ ages, but this is too much…….”

“What?”
Irene, who didn’t understand his words, asked back, and Dewey answered that it was nothing, then continued his questioning.

Her family relationships, likes, hobbies, etc., a long line of prying questions followed.

Irene found it odd to ask these things to a plaything that could be killed at any moment but answered faithfully without asking why.

“Have you ever experienced something strange in your life?”

However, she couldn’t answer that right away.

Not because the answer was awkward, but because the question was too broad.

“What do you mean by ‘something strange’?”

“Um, well…”

How to explain this?

Dewey, who became perplexed, scratched his head, and Carlos, who had been silently listening to their conversation, asked,

“Have you ever used magic?”

Magic. A fantastical word that Irene had never experienced in her life, she shook her head.

“Have you seen a spirit?”

“No.”

“Prophetic dreams? Do you have any strange tattoos on your body?”

When Irene answered that she didn’t have any of those, Dewey’s expression became serious.

“My lord. This is….”

“She’s the one for sure.”

Carlos responded firmly.

What’s for sure?

Irene didn’t understand Carlos’s words, but Dewey seemed to understand, and he finally smiled as if relieved.
