Carlos Dyn Esper.

The only duke of the Esper family, who possesses power rivaling that of the emperor in the empire.

He once served as the crown prince’s tutor, appearing to have good relations with the royal family, but unfortunately, he had a longstanding hostile relationship with the temple.

When and why the temple and the Esper family became hostile was not precisely known.

All that was known was that a very long time ago, when the temple faced danger, the Pope requested assistance from the Esper family several times. However, the head of the Esper family firmly refused, their relationship turned sour, and they clashed several times, leading to the enmity.

In any case, having a longstanding enmity, and with rumors of Carlos being cruel and tyrannical, all the priests were reluctant to face him. They were also afraid.

But when instructed to go directly to the Esper domain to retrieve the witch’s recruit that Carlos had taken, the priests unanimously hesitated and shook their heads.

But someone had to take the responsibility, and Trophea was chosen because he had met Carlos a couple of times before.

Having met Carlos, Trophea was even less willing to go. But since the viceadministrator personally nominated him to go, Trophea had no choice but to come here.

“The principle is to execute witches immediately upon discovery. So, please hand over the witch’s recruit to us.”

Having come this far, he would complete the mission unconditionally. Trophea resolutely told Carlos.

But Carlos looked elsewhere with a nonchalant expression, as if hearing a dog bark in the distance.

“Your Grace.”

“…….”

“Carlos Dyn Esper, Your Grace.”

When Trophea called his full name, the purple eyes finally turned toward him. Still, the indifferent expression made it seem as though he had no intention of listening to Trophea’s words.

It’s not easy as expected. Though he anticipated it, facing it made sweat pour down. Trophea exhaled a deep sigh inwardly but outwardly spoke calmly.

“Witches are evil beings who seduce people, control them like puppets, and ultimately consume them.”

Tap, tap. The sound of tapping the handle resonated evenly.

“But since Your Grace took the witch, everyone is worried if you’ve been bewitched……”

Thud, a dull sound cut off Trophea’s words. Carlos tilted his head slightly.

“Who’s worried about me?”

“That would be the citizens of the empire……”

“Tell me exactly who.”

At Carlos’s demand, Trophea thought of several people.

“That……first and foremost, His Holiness the Pope is concerned.”

Among them, he named the powerful ruler that Carlos would not dare defy.

Then Carlos’s eyes narrowed.

Luckily it worked. The moment Trophea was relieved, Carlos asked.

“There is not a single lie in the fact that the Pope is worried about me?”

No matter the Duke, he couldn’t casually mention the highest and most humble being, the Pope.

“How dare…….”

“How can His Holiness the Pope be casually……”

But when Carlos called the Pope casually, a small commotion broke out among the priests.

Trophea was also greatly taken aback but managed to maintain his composure and replied.

“Of course.”

“Pfft.”

Then Carlos burst into laughter, as if he had heard a very amusing story. It was a clear mockery.

‘I thought I had succeeded, but I actually fell into a trap.’

Realizing this belatedly, Trophea licked his lips but eventually bowed his head without saying anything. He didn’t know what to say, and it seemed that any excuse would not work.

“Your name is Trophea, right?”

A chilly voice came from above. Trophea, with his head bowed, answered that it was.

“The woman I brought with me is a witch?”

“Yes. That woman is a witch.”

“What is the evidence that she is a witch?”

“That woman is the culprit of the arson incident in Silas territory…….”

“Are all arsonists witches?”

Before he could even finish speaking, a returning question made Trophea hesitate for a moment before he opened his heavy mouth.

“That is……no.”
“But why do they think she’s a witch? No, in the first place, is she really the one who set fire to the Silas territory? Looking at the conviction, there must be evidence.”

Trope couldn’t say anything to the barrage of reproachful questions.

All he heard was that a woman named Irene was the perpetrator who set fire to the Silas territory, and also a witch. He hadn’t heard anything about evidence or any other story.

Carlos was the first person to ever discuss evidence in such a matter.

Whether they were commoners or nobles, if they came out to judge witches in the temple, everyone unquestioningly presented a suspect.

“To accuse the woman I brought as a witch and demand a recruit without proper evidence.”

The chilly voice sharply struck Trope’s ears. He frantically waved his hands and quickly denied it.

“No, that’s not true at all! How dare I threaten you. I just heard that the woman might be a witch, and…….”

“She’s not a witch.”

Carlos said firmly, rising.

“So don’t waste any more time and let’s go back.”

As Carlos turned to leave, Trope cried out in desperation.
