Hayden stood completely still in the same spot for less than ten minutes.

Inside his mind, the moral judgment that he should respect Lu’s words clashed fiercely with the thought that he must ignore them and go rescue her.

Hayden waited and waited again, as if through an eternity. Waiting was familiar to him, but this time, holding back his urge to rush out immediately—because of Lu—made it feel even more agonizing.
