Is there really a position called Imperial Special Administrative Officer?

Lord Simon Kainberg, the Court Duke, would reply coldly.

“There is no such position.”

But the Emperor he served reigned above the law.

“If it doesn’t exist, create it.”

And so they did. It was a position clearly backed by the Emperor—obvious to anyone—and thoroughly awkward at that.

The term “administrative” could be flexibly and usefully applied anywhere within the bureaucracy, meaning the holder of this title could literally be inserted into any organization. With the word “special” prefixed to it, this was practically a declaration that the Emperor intended to use it however he pleased.

Yet the expression of the person actually appointed to this post looked as if she’d just bitten into something sour.

“What’s wrong—don’t you like it, my lady?”

Unable to outright say she disliked it, Lu glanced once at the silently standing Court Duke, then politely asked Hayden,

“What task do you intend to assign me?”

Well, it didn’t sound very polite. Normally, one would exclaim, “Thank you so much for granting me such a position, Your Majesty!” But for Lu, this question was the most restrained reaction she could manage.

“An interesting task.”

“Do I have to do it?”

“My lady, I prepared this specially for you—will you really refuse without even hearing what it is?”
