He was a scrawny boy, too starved to eat properly and too sleepless to keep the bloodshot veins from showing in his eyes.

He was a boy who deliberately smeared mud on himself and refused to wash, fearing what horrors he might suffer in an army crawling with madmen. He was just a child, swinging a dull, unsharpened sword with venom-filled eyes, thinking of nothing but sheer survival.

‘How did we meet again?’

He couldn’t recall their first meeting. He did remember being furious—furious that there were child soldiers, shouting in outrage at their very existence.

The academy cadets were already destined to become knights and could even cast magic. If they were indispensable assets on the battlefield, then child soldiers were utterly unacceptable.

“How can you possibly do this! Are we so short on manpower? How dare you drag a child who should be rescued straight into combat! Isn’t it obvious we must stop this! Child soldiers should never, ever exist!”

She yelled furiously at the deputy knight-captain, whose expression was complicated, and beat up the knights who had been beating the boy. She cleverly used her well-known reputation as a ‘genius’ to protect him.

With plenty of able-bodied, experienced knights available, how could they resort to child soldiers? Was everyone mad? Lu wondered if perhaps that was when she first began doubting the entire Kalta Empire itself.

“Finished eating? Good job.”

Even after devouring the bread out of hunger, the boy remained deeply wary of her.

All she could do was leave food for him from afar, replace his sword with a new one, and secretly steal time to let him rest alone. Even then, Lu already vaguely understood—it was impossible to pull this boy completely out of the battlefield.

The deputy knight-captain’s silence spoke volumes. There was something here—a matter no mere academy cadet could dare touch.

Meanwhile, the boy soldier emerged, wiping his hands with a towel. The bruises had faded considerably during the time Lu had been circling around him, making him look quite presentable now. Wow, he’s actually really handsome.

“Washed your hands? Good job.”

“…Aren’t you scared at all?”
