Disguised as a Male Servant in the Duke's House (Completed Main Story) - Chapter 13
“What…?”
Klaus was taken aback by Rozelia’s bold, almost menacing presence.
Rozelia pulled an envelope containing a 1,000-verang banknote from her bosom and slammed it onto the table beside him with a loud thud.
Klaus, his eyes wide, stared at the envelope before slowly picking it up and examining its contents.
“It’s twice the 500 verangs I promised to repay.”
As Klaus skeptically checked the banknote, his eyes landed on the Crown Princess’s signature.
“This banknote—could it possibly be…?”
Klaus glared at Rozelia as if he wanted to devour her, but Rozelia matched his glare without flinching.
“In my current situation—held as collateral instead of a debtor—what’s stopping me? Don’t worry. I’ll only hover around Her Highness Crown Princess until I’ve repaid the full 3,000 verangs I owe.”
Her deliberate, brazen declaration—using the Crown Princess to provoke him—twisted Klaus’s face into a grimace.
“You….”
He ground his teeth, forcing the words through clenched jaws with palpable restraint.
Her irritation only grew at his reaction.
“You, Duke, should try acting rationally for once. Don’t you realize that the more you shield Her Highness Crown Princess, the harder her life in the imperial court will become?”
Frustrated beyond measure, the words slipped out of her as if thrown.
The Duke, who likely sensed this truth himself, froze at Rozelia’s words as though turned to ice.
“Shut up….”
His low, warning growl, spoken with head bowed, carried unmistakable menace—but Rozelia, already beyond reason, would not be swayed by his threat.
“Clutching at others under the guise of caring, while not even understanding your own feelings—that’s just a nuisance.”
“…….”
“Have you ever even asked Her Highness Crown Princess what she wants? Don’t you see that your selfish attitude only puts Her Highness in more awkward and difficult situations?”
Klaus, who had been silently listening, finally lunged forward with a threatening air and seized Rozelia by the collar.
“I told you to shut that mouth. You’d be better off not running your mouth like you know everything when you clearly don’t.”
His towering frame squeezed her throat with crushing force, cutting off her breath and flooding her with primal fear.
Yet her eyes—now sharpened with venom—met his murderous glare with defiant brilliance.
“What are you going to do if I keep talking?”
For a moment, Klaus furrowed one eyebrow oddly, as if doubting his own ears.
“What?”
Frowning, Klaus looked down at Rozelia—more bewildered than angry.
Meeting his gaze with unwavering composure, Rozelia continued, each word crisp and clear.
“Whether you sympathize with Her Highness Crown Princess or harbor feelings for her, I want no part in it—so please don’t twist things and drag me into your nonsense.”
Her green eyes, locked unflinchingly onto his, seemed to spark with flame. Klaus froze, startled by her audacity.
Again. That faint, strange scent rose subtly, grating on his nerves. He couldn’t quite name it—it wasn’t even clear if it truly was a scent at all.
All he knew was that lingering too long in it would dull his mind.
While Klaus stood frozen, Rozelia grabbed his hand—still clutching her collar—and pulled it away. Klaus released her without resistance, staring blankly down at her.
Rozelia stared straight into Klaus’s face and drove home her final point.
“And however I choose to repay my debt is my own affair—so don’t tell me what to do or not to do. Aren’t you just entitled to receive what you’re owed?”
With that, Rozelia slipped swiftly from the space between Klaus and the wall and headed straight for the door.
Bang! The door slammed shut violently, and Klaus stood there, dazed, for a long while.
Outside, Rozelia strode down the corridor with furious steps. Her furrowed brow, clenched teeth, and fixed glare ahead were betrayed only by the tears welling in the corners of her eyes.
Irritably, she wiped them away with the back of her hand and muttered a curse.
Damn it—why the hell am I crying like a fool?
There was no reason to cry. Only reason to be angry…
Ignoring her reddened eyes, Rozelia stared ahead with venom in her expression.
That arrogant bastard—daring to grab me by the collar while I’m struggling to repay my own damn debt?
Destined as he is to hover uselessly around the Crown Princess and eventually be branded a traitor and erased!
The Duke, blindly walking into his own doom without a clue about his future, was utterly pathetic and infuriating.
Even if I gave him advice, he’d just cover his eyes and plug his ears—never listening.
Rozelia gritted her teeth, recalling the cold, blade-sharp glint in his eyes as he’d gripped her collar.
Just as the original Rozelia died alone on the execution grounds with the Duke never stepping forward for her, she would not lift a finger when Klaus was accused of treason.
Trending
No—she’d even smile brightly before his very eyes, thinking he’d gotten exactly what he deserved.
[This is the timeline separator]Claiming the weather was too nice to stay indoors, Clojet dragged Rozelia into the garden, abruptly ordered a tea table set up, and began enjoying afternoon tea.
Rozelia, seated unwittingly across from her, sipped the tea handed to her without tasting it, gazing blankly into her cup.
Noticing Rozelia’s distant, hollow expression, Clojet spoke up.
“Did something go wrong when you met Her Highness Crown Princess?”
Startled, Rozelia raised her eyes and gave an awkward smile at Clojet’s concerned question.
“No. Thanks to your help, Lady Princess, that matter has been resolved nicely.”
“Really? Then why that face?”
“My face?”
“You look like a destitute young lady crushed under mountains of debt.”
Ah… well, that’s accurate enough…
Rozelia offered another awkward smile, and Clojet studied her face meaningfully before hinting gently,
“Klaus was at the palace that day too, wasn’t he? Did you happen to run into him?”
Sharp as a tack for such a little thing.
Reluctantly, Rozelia nodded.
“What did that cold-blooded bastard say? He gets even nastier when it comes to anything involving Ibellione—I mean, Her Highness Crown Princess.”
“Lady Clojet!”
Mellda, Clojet’s governess serving tea nearby, let out a horrified shriek.
Ignoring her, Clojet merely shrugged indifferently and continued.
“If he says anything, just tell him you met Her Highness on my behalf—as my errand.”
She’d already brazenly declared right to the Duke’s face that she’d use the Crown Princess to repay her debt…
Suddenly, regret surged through her.
She could’ve phrased it more gently—but provoked by Klaus’s aggressive reaction, she’d impulsively thrown out the most incendiary subject she could think of.
Had anyone else but the Duke been there, she might well have been arrested for treasonous slander against the Crown Princess.
Ugh… I really need to tame this damn temper of mine…
“Let bygones be bygones, Antonio. You stepped in it—now figure out how to clean it up.”
For someone so young, she’s remarkably perceptive…
Rozelia looked at Clojet with newfound admiration.
Clojet, however, remained aloof, simply tilting her teacup as if unaware of Rozelia’s gaze.
Just then, Mellda, refilling the pastries, spoke cautiously.
“My Lady Clojet, you do remember today is the day for your debutante dress fitting, don’t you?”
“Sigh… Mellda, can’t I just wear anything?”
“Don’t be absurd! It’s your very first debutante ball—you can’t possibly say such things!”
“Ugh…”
Come to think of it, Clojet’s debutante ball was less than a month away.
Most girls her age would be counting down the days with eager anticipation, yet Clojet seemed wholly uninterested.
Then again, Rozelia herself wasn’t particularly interested either.
Though she’d grown up neglected in a baronial house and never had her own debutante ball, she’d never felt regretful or envied other noble ladies for theirs.
After all, a “debutante ball” was just a fancy term for entering the marriage market—and since Rozelia had no interest in marriage, it all seemed…
“Such a bother.”
Yes—nothing more than a tedious chore.
It was surprising, though, that Clojet, a grand noble, felt the same way.
“A bother?! Good heavens! You’re the daughter of Duke Valtezar! Young nobles across the social scene are surely anticipating your debut!”
“What if I end up with someone like Klaus?”
Mellda tilted her head in confusion at Clojet’s sullen remark.
“Wouldn’t that be something to celebrate with open arms?”
At Mellda’s innocent reply, both Clojet and Rozelia made faces as if they’d just bitten into bitter persimmons.
When the two stared oddly at her, Mellda simply shrugged, baffled.
“By the way, I’m worried the Head Butler still hasn’t decided on the ball’s theme.”

“Wasn’t that theme discussion going on half a year ago already?”
“Exactly! They’ve been in a frenzy preparing for months—food and venue layout are set—but they still haven’t finalized the most important thing: the theme.”
Meldda sighed deeply, but Clojet responded as if it were someone else’s problem.
“Then why not just hold it without a theme?”
At Clojet’s blunt suggestion, Mellda gasped in horror and shot to her feet.
“How can you say something so unfeeling! Have you forgotten Viscount Belmont’s daughter’s debutante ball?”
“Hmm… I was sneezing all day and couldn’t focus—I don’t remember much.”
The House of Belmont was nearly as prominent as the House of Valtezar, and the original novel had briefly mentioned their ball.
They’d gathered every flower imaginable until the building’s interior vanished beneath blossoms—
creating a forest of flowers through which the Belmont heiress appeared like a floral sprite.
Of course, Clojet had suffered terribly due to her severe pollen allergies…
In high society, where balls were frequent, elite noble families preferred themed balls to ordinary ones, competing to outdo each other in grandeur.
Having spent over a month close to Clojet, Rozelia had discovered that beneath the girl’s prickly, haughty exterior lay a surprisingly easygoing and thoughtful heart—and she genuinely wanted to support her.
Yet Rozelia also knew how unforgiving the social world Clojet was about to enter would be. Worried, she decided to offer just a small helping hand.
“How about a masquerade ball?”
Instantly, both Mellda’s and Clojet’s gazes turned to Rozelia.
Mellda’s puzzled expression quickly shifted to disapproval as she shook her head.
“Masquerades are so outdated. That trend died more than ten years ago!”
Rozelia smiled playfully at Mellda’s dismissive tone and continued.
“A Lugbeljet-style masquerade, you mean.”
A Lugbeljet-style masquerade required masks that covered the entire face, with only narrow slits for the eyes.
Since such masks concealed every hint of identity or status, anonymity lent the event an air of mystery—briefly making it fashionable before it faded.
But the masquerade Rozelia proposed was the upcoming Rapellios-style, soon to sweep the continent.
“Have you heard of the masks now trending across the Western Empire and throughout the western continent?”

Lu Yuner: “Young prince, you’re drunk.”
Su Qingwan: “Qingwan isn’t drunk. Qingwan likes Sister Yuner, likes you so much, likes you to bits…” Before he can finish, Lu Yuner’s eyes flash with emotion and she leans in closer.
