The sun had not yet fully risen in the dim, hazy dawn.

A few early-rising birds chirped busily outside. Their restless noise reflexively jolted my eyes wide open.

It was six in the morning—the usual time I woke up to take care of Sammeomma.

“It’s just habit….”

I sighed, pulling the pillow over my face. There wasn’t much to do today anyway, even if I got up early.

I closed my eyes and tossed and turned a bit more, but sleep wouldn’t come. With no other choice, I sat up.

Today marked the second day of my vacation. Yesterday had been chaotic—caring for a sick researcher and repairing the damaged enclosure—but from today onward, I was officially unemployed.

What should I do all day to pass the time? The melancholy unemployed soul picked out some suitable clothes, changed, and shuffled slowly down to the first-floor dining room.

Outside the dining room stood a cart sent from the Kronen Palace kitchen, holding my breakfast. The cart contained only a single serving meant for me.

I’d always eaten alone, but knowing I was the only one in this vast building made my stomach feel emptier than usual.

“I’m lonely….”

The peach jam toast—surely delicious—tasted dry and gritty, like chewing sand.

After finishing my gloomy meal, I left the lab for a light walk.

Normally, my fluffy Sammeomma would be walking beside me as if it were the most natural thing—but today, I was alone.

Thanks to that, I could stroll slowly, gazing at the sky and observing the roadside trees… but it wasn’t particularly enjoyable.
