Ricardo held his head high, staring straight ahead. Though his clenched jaw clearly showed he was angry, he didn’t loosen his arms around her.

Lienne suppressed a smile and quickly burrowed deeper into his embrace. She knew better than anyone that if she didn’t soothe his mood soon, he’d remain upset for far longer.

She whispered,

“No, not ‘us’—me and Prince Chaplin. But Rika, are you really jealous over something I don’t even remember doing?”

“It’s not just that. Walter would never take a boat out on the lake. And I don’t even know what passed between you two on that boat.”

“Does that even make sense? We’d only just met!”

“Why not? Walter liked you the moment he saw you this time too.”

Lienne gently grasped Ricardo’s chin, turning his face to meet her eyes despite his attempt to look away.

Even with his pouting expression, he obediently let his gaze settle on her—and Lienne kissed him loudly enough to make a distinct smacking sound.

“Just like I did the moment I saw you?”

Ricardo seemed determined to stay angry, but he finally burst out laughing. Who could have imagined him looking like this?

“You do realize Prince Chaplin is someone we should be grateful to, right?”

Ricardo didn’t answer, but Lienne knew better than anyone how much he cared for Walter. Leaning against his shoulder, she continued,

“Let’s keep reading. Until we fall asleep, just as Her Late Majesty said—we don’t have much time left.”

Ricardo nodded and turned to the next page of the letter. Stuart’s handwriting was neat yet carried an unmistakable air of freedom, perfectly mirroring his personality.
