We strolled through the garden, reluctant to part ways. The path was so quiet as we walked hand in hand that I could barely recall what we’d just been talking about.

The air, slightly warmer than dawn, gently calmed my heart.

“I think I’ll need to visit the Imperial Palace this afternoon.”

This was the first time Ricardo had ever shared his schedule with me, so I nodded, feeling a bit touched.

Behind him, crimson and golden cockscombs swayed at waist height—a vivid summer scene unfurled in full bloom.

“I won’t be able to return to the mansion for a while starting tomorrow.”

I wanted to ask why, but the words wouldn’t come out. I couldn’t even begin to guess what he was planning.

“Don’t you need to get some rest?”

“Even though you ran away.”

He finally showed a hint of disappointment about my earlier departure from Hyacinth, something he hadn’t mentioned until now.

“You can sleep here too. Freddie might be shocked, but there are plenty of rooms in this annex. And it’s closer to the Imperial Palace if you head straight from the Winter Wing.”

I rambled on, unwilling to say goodbye. He nodded readily.

“If you stay by my side until I fall asleep.”

“I’ll even sing for you.”

He briefly furrowed his brow, as if remembering just how badly I sing.
