It was unfair. Unfair to the point of being disgustingly so. You saved me, brought my family to me, promised to get engaged just to save them once they arrived, and even came to fetch me wherever I was.

“What?”

At my sullen retort, Ricardo narrowed his eyes and soon let out a laugh, as if it were utterly absurd. Watching his chest heave with each amused chuckle made my mood darken further.

“What’s with that laugh? Is that rumor really true? Is that why you’re so callously pushing me away?”

“Let’s head down already. Before it gets any darker.”

Ricardo deftly changed the subject. Even his low-toned “Enough” sounded charmingly persuasive as he turned away without a trace of hesitation.

He’s leaving again. Leaving me behind like this.

I know why. I know precisely why the name Ricardo is always accompanied by this lingering sense of disappointment.

Because he doesn’t love me—because, even as time flies by so swiftly, he has no intention of ever loving me.

You know it, and I know it too—why, despite having a short, direct path between us, we keep taking such a long, winding detour.

I know the conflicted feelings that stop you from pushing me away when I draw near, even though you can’t bring yourself to open your heart—and I know why your lips always tremble whenever they barely brush against mine.

Unable to endure Ricardo’s cold indifference any longer, my frustration overflowed, and I shouted toward the back of his head.

“Why? Are you afraid I’ll die?”
