I tightly clasped my hands resting on my knees. Only then did I realize I’d been gripping them as tightly as if I were clinging to a rope dangling from a cliff, holding onto a yellow rose.

His low, subdued voice sounded like a warning not to ask further, so I didn’t bring it up again.

“But… are we really… going through with it?”

“…With what?”

“Our engagement.”

The carriage rattled along the rain-soaked road. By now, the rain had turned into a downpour, deepening the silence inside the carriage.

Once again, Ricardo refused to give a straightforward answer—clearly acting like someone who very much did not want to be engaged.
