What book had I been reading back then? Perhaps I had read him a myth, prettily wrapped up, about how cruelly the gods treated humankind.

He was much taller now, yet he closed his eyes just as he had back then and covered them with his arms. I slowly opened the very first page of the book.

Pushing aside swirling thoughts and hazy memories, I read the printed words before my eyes. The Eastern witch who once couldn’t read or write had changed her future in only one way—by learning letters. Perhaps it was all just so I could learn to lull Ricardo to sleep.

He truly fell asleep before I could even finish reading the first page. I covered his body with the blanket Angela had brought and stayed by his side for a long while.
