Thanks to Freddie sending a messenger ahead, I didn’t have to wait long before meeting Walter. His face was stiff with tension he hadn’t fully concealed when he entered the reception room where I was waiting.

I briefly thought how I hadn’t yet thanked him for the last incident and was already here making another unreasonable request, but right now, I had no luxury to worry about propriety.

“Have you arrived?”

Barely suppressing my urge to immediately explain the situation to Walter, I offered him an awkward smile.

As if sensing I was mustering the last dregs of my patience just to force a smile, he stopped the maid who offered to bring tea and dismissed everyone nearby.

“Please sit down first.”

Only then did I realize I’d been pacing restlessly without even taking a seat. Dazed, I stared in the direction his hand indicated before slowly shaking my head.

“No, no. I’m sorry for barging in so suddenly. It’s just an urgent matter—I had no choice.”

Walter slowly approached me. Watching his composed gait calmed my restless heart slightly. He gave me a fleeting smile as his careful gaze met my eyes.

“It’s fine. I assumed you had a reason for sending a messenger. Although I didn’t expect you to rush over immediately after.”

Only upon hearing Walter’s calm voice did I finally take in him and his surroundings. The gentle, orderly reception room suited him perfectly.

After a moment’s gaze into his warm sea-green eyes, I nodded.

“I’m sorry, but I came because I have something I must ask of you.”

Carefully, he extended his arm to guide me to a seat, and this time, I obediently followed his lead.

Once seated, I told him everything Julian had just told me.
