Duke Paquin was away on business on a distant continent, so I couldn’t meet him, but judging from the gossip among the servants’ wives about his character, it was as clear as daylight how he would treat Sabrina.

Sighing at the feeling of being walled in from every side, I watched as Sabrina lightly tapped the table with her finger.

“Do you even know how formidable the Demahen Knights are?”

Sabrina’s voice cut through the heavy silence, tinged with a faint laugh. Even now, in this situation, she was trying to reassure me.

“The Demahen cavalry is so overwhelming that no one around here can match them. The scariest part? No one knows their exact strength. They say fear itself is the greatest weapon on the battlefield.”

“Where did you hear all that?”

“They were spouting all sorts of wild rumors. Asking if you knew why both Prince Rochester and the Crown Princess vanished at the same time. Oh, by the way—did you hear? His Highness the Crown Prince isn’t in the Empire either.”

I already knew the Crown Princess had taken her son to Resotia, but I didn’t add anything for Sabrina.

“So what did you say to all that?”

“Oh, I just batted my eyelashes, as usual.”

Her feigned innocence was so vivid in my mind that I couldn’t help but smile.
