The city of Resotia, which nearly became ruins due to the Dermayer Empire, is known as the blood-red city.

This land where I live is estimated to have been the bustling capital of a kingdom established by the Tesarians, roughly 2,000 years before the Imperial Era began.

There’s a saying about this city: ‘It’s as old as the existence of light itself.’

The time when light came into existence implies something before even this land existed, making it an essentially absurd statement.

It was just a metaphor for how ancient this city was.

The reason why this city could have such an endless history without destruction was its unique geography. Surrounded by strange rock cliffs and blurred by red sandstone hills, Resotia was a perfect desert hideout.

About 1,000 years ago, when the Dermayer Empire emerged, the invaders ruthlessly trampled this land.

For them, who had already conquered many nations and proclaimed themselves the Dermayer Empire, this beautiful yet small city was nothing more than easy prey.

However, the ruler who founded the empire, Wesley Schneider, proclaimed after setting foot on this land:

〈It shall be established as a Duchy and preserved.〉

This is why the current Resotia, geographically attached to the mighty nation of Dermayer, still holds its status as an independent country.

But as time passed, a great civilization rose in this once desert land. The only evidence that this place was once a desert remained only in the border regions of Resotia.

“Aaaaah!”

I woke up from a nightmare, as if struck by lightning out of a clear sky.

My body felt pinned down like during sleep paralysis, but the terrible dream continued.

〈The girl from the east who couldn’t read or write was eventually burned at the stake.〉

Before the sentence even finished, flames erupted before my eyes. The term ‘east’ used by people in the dream was a derogatory term used by the Dermayer Empire for the Duchy of Resotia.

〈How dare she, a witch, try to take the place of a holy woman. It’s a grave sin.〉

The witch writhing and suffering in the fiercely burning flames was none other than me.

〈It’s too hot, too hot. Please…… save me.〉

Then, someone walked steadily into the immense blaze. The fire flared up, but he didn’t stop, walking as if strolling through a night garden, without a hint of disarray. Surely, he couldn’t be human.

Yet, looking at him tore my heart apart. My feelings, a mix of resentment and longing, boiled inside me.

〈You have a chance.〉

A voice like a thin, long sigh suddenly reached me.

〈Yes, whatever it is, just give me a chance, quickly!〉

My scream, agonized by the fire, echoed in the air, and the voice laughed eerily.

Boom, crash.

With another thunderclap, I realized everything in an instant.

I had just died.

It wasn’t something I knew because I was told. It just was. The silence like death, the solitude deeper than the sea, and the sensation of being pushed out of my body told me so.

Then, suddenly, light poured into the pitch-black world. Reflexively following the light, I opened my eyes again.

I looked around the room. Nothing had changed.

I hadn’t transformed into someone else, nor had my circumstances changed.

Lienne Rowe Pennel.

The unwanted child of the Pennel Count family. A ten-year-old illegitimate child, left to die by the maids without uttering a word.

In my memories, I loved a man.

Ricardo Gardarelli Rochester.

The heir of one of the empire’s three great Ducal families, Rochester, and the next Emperor chosen by the oracle.

〈The one who will kill his father and become the sun in the sky.〉
If my memory is correct, the protagonist of this dreadful oracle is currently staying in the East Wing, opposite to the West Wing where I am.

An unnamed child in the East Wing.

‘I’m ten years old now, so Ricardo must be… probably twelve?’

Suddenly, Ricardo’s fine black hair fluttering elegantly and his deep black eyes, seemingly capable of engulfing all emotions, flashed in my mind.

Just thinking of him made my heart painfully race.

‘What is this feeling?’

While deeply contemplating my emotions, a sudden realization struck me.

“Ah!”

I covered my mouth, startled by the loudness of my own voice.

‘So, what? I’m going to burn to death because of my desire for Ricardo.’

Ha, is that all?

Like all protagonists of oracles, Ricardo was bound to have a painful childhood. And the source of that pain was right here, in the Count Pennel house.

The one who cruelly abused Ricardo was Justin Rowe Pennel, the eldest son of the Pennel family.

He was a perverse lover of art, so to speak.

Ugh, I swallowed an unrefined groan.

“Maybe 3 years…”

If my memory serves right, unspeakable horrors would continue for another three years from now.

The outcome was dreadful.

The Pennel family was exterminated for not only kidnapping and imprisoning the heir of a Ducal family of the Empire but also for abusing him.

Fortunately, I survived the extermination of my family because I lived far away in the West Wing.
