“A woman? You just said that, right? I didn’t mishear it, did I, Father?”

Ji Yeon’s eyes, which had been flashing with incredulous laughter, gradually began to burn with anger.

“What exactly do you mean by ‘a woman,’ Father? That even if she doesn’t want to, she has to stay home all day cooking, cleaning, and doing housework for her husband and family? That she has to understand and turn a blind eye to a husband who fools around outside, and then when he comes back, swallow her humiliation and live as if nothing happened? Is that what you mean when you say ‘a woman’ should do that?”

“What’s wrong with that? That’s the life Joo Ran wanted, and that girl Se Ah wanted too! Chairman Cha Seung Jo answered with a sneer, as if it were no big deal.

“And you two don’t have a child yet, that’s why. Once you have a child, Min Woo will stop wandering outside and settle down, and you’ll be too busy with the baby to think about anything else.”

“Ha! Father! Did you meet Kang Joo Ran because you didn’t have a child? Is that how Min Woo was born? I… I can’t live knowing this unfairness anymore. I can’t live with a husband who deceives me.”

Ji Yeon clenched her fists tightly to steady her trembling body without realizing it.

Her palms hurt from her nails digging in, but she had no time to care about that.

“Over the past three years, even while being mentally abused by Cha Min Woo and Kang Joo Ran, I felt grateful to you, Father, for treating me kindly. I thought you were the only different one in this house. But looking back, I realized that although you were there in many moments and said nice things, you never stopped their behavior—you just let it go. Sometimes you even pretended not to notice and encouraged it.”

“This is ridiculous…!”

“Now I finally understand. Ah… Maybe you were trying to change me through those two. A daughter-in-law who goes out to work in society, using others instead of your own words—to turn her into an obedient woman, one good at supporting her husband, a quiet woman who waits at home, a woman who endures her husband’s affairs without complaint.”

“Ha!”

Chairman Cha’s face, which had been mocking her with one eyebrow raised as if it wasn’t worth a long response, grew increasingly distorted.

“On the surface, you acted like a good father-in-law who supported my career, and to my parents, you appeared as a kind in-law who treated their daughter well. But I never imagined you harbored such horrific thoughts.”
