For days on end, with the heatwave hovering around 40 degrees Celsius, Woo Yeon’s T-shirt was soaked through with sweat.

The reporting team had been staying temporarily in a school located in a small town in northwestern Syria. Half the school had been destroyed two years ago by a government airstrike, but fortunately, the building had been restored earlier this year.

Even in the most dangerous moments—when shells could explode at any second—watching the children’s bright, earnest eyes as they studied always made Woo Yeon’s heart ache unexpectedly.
