“What? Us?”

Ha Yeon looked back and forth between Min Je and Ji Hoo, her face full of shock. She had been about to protest, insisting such an absurd suggestion was out of the question, when Jun Won spoke up first.

“Oh dear, my stomach… I can’t do it.”

“It’s fine if we don’t come in first. Let’s go for it!”

Ha Yeon stared blankly as Ji Hoo grabbed Jun Won’s hand and quickly dashed off.

An awkward silence settled between the two who remained.

“…You’re really going to do it?”

“What? Not confident? Then we don’t have to.”

At Min Je’s boastful tone, Ha Yeon’s gaze sharpened. It wasn’t the two-legged race that frightened her—it was *him*!

Her eyes brimming with discontent, she shot him a glare before crossing her arms tightly and declaring,

“Fine, whatever. What’s so impossible about it?”

Min Je chuckled softly in response.

“Alright then, let’s give it a try.”

As Min Je and Ha Yeon stepped forward to compete, curious glances poured in from onlookers. Yet Ha Yeon held her head high, eyes wide and unflinching.

What’s the big deal? It’s just a little race—and Ji Hoo wants that doll! Rather than avoiding people’s stares, Ha Yeon deliberately met each gaze with a fierce, almost venomous intensity. Her expression was so intimidating that startled onlookers flinched and quickly looked away.

Watching this, Min Je stifled a laugh, letting out a low chuckle. He hadn’t seen anything this entertaining in quite a while.

Noticing Min Je’s shoulders shaking, Ha Yeon jabbed her elbow sharply into his side.

“I’m absolutely going to win first place, so you’d better keep that in mind.”

“Yeah, yeah. Of course you will.”

At Min Je’s teasing reply, Ha Yeon’s eyes flickered briefly—she’d never seen him laugh so openly and freely before.

His sharp eyes, now curved with genuine amusement, sent her heart pounding wildly once more.

Ah, of course—it’s *you* who’s the problem. Sighing, Ha Yeon pressed a hand to her forehead. Whether her mood rises or falls with his expressions, whether they win or lose the race, even today’s weather—it’s all your fault.

Blaming him for everything her stream of consciousness touched, she slipped her foot into the foam loop handed out to participants.

Since a brief practice period was allotted to prevent accidents, Ha Yeon tried syncing her steps with Min Je.

“One, two, one, two…”

Oh no. Damn it. We’re doomed! Ha Yeon gazed up at Min Je with a dazed expression.

“Hmm, this isn’t as easy as it looks, huh?”

Min Je scratched his cheek awkwardly. Even if their steps matched perfectly, victory would be uncertain—but at this rate, taking even a single step forward was a struggle. At this pace, they’d likely stumble clumsily rather than manage to run at all.

Apparently, the mistake had been trying to synchronize only their feet without letting their bodies lean into each other.

“Alright, contestants, please line up at the starting line.”

Hearing the announcement, Min Je turned to Ha Yeon and said,

“If you want to win, hold on.”

Ha Yeon stared blankly at the arm he offered, then resolutely gripped it. Since both wore short sleeves, their bare skin pressed directly together.

A tingling sensation shot through her toes at the contact of firm muscle against soft skin, but Ha Yeon deliberately ignored it. Right now, winning was all that mattered—so she fixed her gaze purposefully on the prize: the teddy bear.

Min Je was just as flustered. This unfamiliar sensation stirred up unexpected thoughts. It was just arm-to-arm contact, yet the feeling of her soft skin seemed to overwhelm every other sense in his body.

In that fleeting moment, conflicting urges—to press closer, yet to pull away immediately—swirled chaotically inside him.

Bang! The starter’s pistol rang out.

“What are you waiting for? Run!”

Ha Yeon yanked hard on Min Je’s unmoving arm. As a result, their arms pressed fully together. After a brief, conflicted expression, Min Je visibly tightened his grip around her wrist and said firmly,

“Keep up and don’t fall.”

At once, their speed surged forward. Ha Yeon let out a startled yelp and strained to match his stride.

Incredibly, they swiftly overcame their initial last-place position, accelerating to a pace so unreal that other teams blurred past them and vanished behind.

Soon, only one other pair remained ahead. Just a little more, just a little further…

So focused was Ha Yeon on winning that she didn’t even realize she’d ended up holding Min Je’s hand.

‘Finally caught up…!’

Just as they were about to take the lead, Ha Yeon’s feet tangled under the strain of their speed.

“No!”

With a helpless cry, her body wobbled. Min Je desperately braced himself to keep her from falling—but overcoming their momentum proved impossible.

“Watch out!”

Thanks to Min Je pulling her waist almost into an embrace, they narrowly avoided a humiliating face-plant, though Ha Yeon’s palm and knees slammed hard into the ground.

“Ugh…”

Pain, embarrassment, and disappointment mingled into a miserable groan.

“Are you okay?”

Min Je urgently examined her palm—it was scraped and bleeding from the impact.

“Oh… we could’ve won first place…”

Watching the other teams already cross the finish line, Ha Yeon muttered dazedly.

Min Je exhaled sharply in exasperation. This woman—he couldn’t believe she’d gotten hurt and yet fretted only about losing first place, as if her own well-being meant nothing.

“Is *that* really what matters right now?”

At Min Je’s icy tone, Ha Yeon snapped back to her senses.

“It’s not that bad.”

She found herself reflexively offering excuses, unsure why she even felt the need to justify herself—his gaze seemed to silently scold her.

“Sorry. I should’ve run slower.”

But when Min Je sighed deeply and apologized, Ha Yeon’s eyes wavered. She never expected he’d take responsibility and apologize like this.

“No, no—it was my own carelessness.”

She waved her hands dismissively, shaking her head as if trying to ignore the renewed pounding of her heart.

“Oh dear, what a pity. As a consolation for the team that narrowly missed first place, the emcee—on personal discretion—will award a mini teddy bear.”

The emcee handed them a teddy bear one-tenth the size of the grand prize. Better than nothing, perhaps? Ha Yeon returned to the spectator seats with complicated feelings.

“Unnie, are you hurt?”

At Ji Hoo’s question, Ha Yeon flushed and forced an awkward smile.

“No, I’m fine. But… what should we do? This bear is so tiny.”

She’d wanted to proudly present him with the large one. Handing over this palm-sized bear instead left her deeply disappointed.

“No, I like this one even better.”

Ji Hoo replied earnestly, as if to reassure her. Such a sweet child. Touched by his mature demeanor, Ha Yeon pulled him into a warm embrace.

[This is the timeline separator]

The eventful sports day had ended, and night had quietly fallen. Ha Yeon smiled softly as she watched Ji Hoo sleep.

He clutched the bear she’d given him like a precious treasure. After gently stroking his forehead once, Ha Yeon quietly left the room.

After such an exhausting day, she’d decided to skip their usual nightly tutoring session. Thus, she tiptoed carefully down the stairs, intending only to quickly retrieve the book she’d left in the art room—hoping to avoid running into Min Je altogether. Somehow, facing him felt awkward.

Her emotions, tossed up and down all day because of him, still hadn’t settled. Even now, the loud pounding of her heart from earlier echoed in her ears. She simply didn’t want to see him today—or rather, avoiding him was probably best for many reasons.

Just as Ha Yeon stealthily crossed the living room, someone called out to her.

“I was waiting for you—perfect timing.”

Startled, Ha Yeon shrieked in fright.

“Aaah! G-Goodness! Why—why are you here?”

She’d been so focused on grabbing the book and rushing back upstairs that she hadn’t noticed Min Je sitting on the sofa.

“Why so jumpy?”

Min Je raised an eyebrow at her unnatural reaction.

“N-Not jumpy at all.”

Already feeling cornered, Ha Yeon instinctively denied it. In response, Min Je narrowed his eyes suspiciously and gestured toward himself.

“Fine. Come over here anyway.”

“W-Why?”

Ha Yeon instinctively shifted into defense mode. Something in her gut warned her this was dangerous—*Kang Min Jae*. Don’t get tangled up with him any further. Getting close to him now might push her into a point of no return.

But when Min Je jerked his chin toward the first-aid kit on the table, her expression turned deeply conflicted.

“You’re injured.”

She couldn’t exactly run away from someone offering to treat her wound—and she had no valid reason to refuse his kindness. Biting her lip, Ha Yeon hesitantly approached him step by step.

“It’s just a tiny scratch. It’ll heal on its own soon anyway.”

Maybe if she said this, he’d simply nod and back off. It was a slim hope, but Ha Yeon gambled on it anyway.

“Don’t talk nonsense.”

Predictably, her plea fell on deaf ears.

Resigned, Ha Yeon perched cautiously on the edge of the sofa. Surely he wouldn’t insist on treating it himself…?

Her eyes rolled as she watched Min Je open the first-aid kit decisively.

“Let me see.”

He held out his hand, indicating she should show him the scraped palm.

Suddenly flustered, Ha Yeon couldn’t bring herself to extend her hand immediately. She didn’t want to touch him again—not after her turbulent emotions had only just begun to calm. Another contact and she’d be utterly undone.

“Hurry up.”

Unaware of her inner turmoil, Min Je urged her forward as if coaxing someone hesitant due to fear of pain.

“I’ll… do it myself.”

Ha Yeon finally managed to speak, hesitantly offering her hand.

“No need. I’ll do it—just stay still. It’s partly my fault you got hurt.”

Was it his words that troubled her? His touch? Or perhaps her own helplessness in being swept along by him? To keep her confusion hidden, Ha Yeon pressed her lips tightly together.

“It might sting a little.”

After applying antiseptic, Min Je watched her expression carefully. Mistaking her tense face for pain, he gently blew on the wound—the same way he would for Ji Hoo.

Ha Yeon’s shoulders twitched. His unwavering gaze, the warmth of his touch—long ago, she’d forgotten the pain entirely.

Goosebumps prickled all over her body. Muttering a quiet curse at her traitorous reaction to his breath, Ha Yeon gave up resisting and simply watched him numbly.

Min Je gazed absently at her trembling lashes—and unconsciously applied too much antiseptic.

‘It must sting.’

He couldn’t believe how careless he’d become. Perhaps handing her the kit—like she’d suggested—would’ve been wiser than insisting on treating her himself. Yet in the end, he stubbornly chose to do it.

He didn’t know the exact reason. He just… wanted to.

Maybe he wanted to keep watching her faint exhales, her trembling shoulders. Or maybe, without realizing it, he was simply enjoying the contact with her.

Merely holding her hand filled him with a strange sense of satisfaction. Unwilling to let go, he meticulously tended even the smallest wound.

Min Je’s gaze, clouded by unfamiliar emotion, lifted to Ha Yeon’s face. Her trembling eyes made her feelings impossible to miss.

‘Like this, how could I possibly let you go?’

His eyes darkened, deepening in intensity.

Regret With All Your Might (Completed Main Story)

27/12/2025
Side Story 5 Side Story 4

Male lead is a Divorced Husband

She said to him: “Tell me, what makes you like me? I’ll change it!”

Liu Changning transmigrated into a female cannon fodder character in a female-dominant novel.

After reading the first half of the novel’s plot, the first thing she did upon transmigration was to divorce the Pan Jinlian-style male protagonist she had just married.

She indulged herself, pretending to be ugly and poor.

But as time passed, the way that man looked at her became more and more unusual…

Liu Changning was dumbfounded: Tell me, what makes you like me? I’ll change!

――

This lifetime, Pei Yuanshao was rejected by the same woman twice!

The first time, she drove him away. Forced by the situation, he endured the waves of anger in his heart, yielding and humbling himself.

That person lay slanted on a rocking chair, her sallow face emotionless: “If you don’t want a divorce, go cook!”

Pei Yuanshao’s face was dark and gloomy: “You!”

The second time, after the crisis in Jinling City was resolved, the new emperor sent someone to pick him up. He turned around, stammering: “I… I have to go. If you keep me…”

That person lay on the kang bed, her back to him, as if she had long anticipated this day, crisp and clear: “Goodbye!”

Pei Yuanshao was so angry his fingers trembled: “You… you!”

The mission of family and country made him restrain himself, averting his eyes and turning to leave this broken household.

Two years later, they met again. Seeing her ethereal face, his body shook like a sieve.

“She was originally a ‘she’!”

At the Qionglin Banquet, the top scholar of the imperial examination, a talented person with exceptional speech and conduct, all the unmarried young gentlemen from aristocratic families looked at her with shy and timid eyes.

The peerless imperial official Pei Yuanshao felt the anger in his heart erupt. He pointed at the woman surrounded by the crowd at the Qionglin Banquet, his thin lips slightly curled: “Little sister, I wants that person to be the wife-master of my Mingde Prince Manor.”
