Did Regalis truly want to marry her, or was he merely coveting something he couldn’t possess?

He was utterly incomprehensible.

Orentia spoke to Regalis with as much composure as she could muster.

“If I’m to remarry, shouldn’t I first negotiate a smooth and amicable divorce with His Grace the Grand Duke? So please, let me go now—with my escorting knight.”

At that, Regalis released the hand propping up his chin and tapped lightly on the table.

“What makes you think I’d trustingly let a lady go—especially with a knight in tow? You’d just run off and conspire with Dimidius, wouldn’t you?”

She hadn’t expected him to release her easily. But this was the Crown Prince’s palace, and once Dimidius returned to the Grand Ducal Mansion and realized she’d vanished, it would only be a matter of time before his fury drove him straight to the palace.

If he stormed the capital with armed knights, that would be outright rebellion. She doubted Dimidius would commit such a blunder—but there was always the possibility. After all, when it came to her, Dimidius sometimes lost his reason entirely.

‘So I absolutely must find a way to escape safely from here.’

Orentia swallowed hard and made a suggestion to Regalis.

“How about drawing up a formal contract instead? Contracts carry legal force, after all.”

But Regalis tilted his head thoughtfully for a moment, then his eyes sparkled.

“I believe there’s something far more reliable than that. A contract is just a scrap of paper, but a person isn’t.”

“What do you mean by that?”

“That knight you brought along as a sort of insurance—leave him here as a hostage. Go settle your divorce with Dimidius Belial and return.”
