Regalis visited the prison to see the Empress before attending the party. The Empress was receiving special treatment of her own kind, but her complexion was very poor. It was understandable—after all, she had been formally deposed following her trial.

Regalis looked at her with pity and spoke.

“Mother. Are you all right?”

The Empress trembled all over and clutched her dress tightly.

“I’m fine. If you someday inherit the throne and become Emperor, you will restore this mother’s honor.”

Regalis had always assumed he would naturally become Emperor, but Saintess Daphne’s prophetic dream weighed heavily on his mind.

He wanted to give the Empress a firm answer, yet the words wouldn’t come.

Seeing Regalis hesitate, the Empress narrowed her eyes fiercely.

“Don’t tell me the rumors circulating outside are true? That you’re involved with the Duchess?”

“I already know your relationships with women are complicated. But you’ve always kept it well hidden until now. Get a hold of yourself. You can’t afford even the slightest blemish. If you have any feelings for the Duchess, cut them off decisively.”

The Empress’s words made sense. It was true that the scandal had already caused a slight stain. Though Regalis himself hadn’t really cared about it.

He looked at the Empress, who seemed on the verge of collapse, and finally managed to speak.

“Please take care of your health, Mother. I’ll be off now.”
