Dimidius still felt as if Orentia’s warmth lingered in his chest. When she had rushed over and embraced him, euphoria had surged through him as though he owned the world. Thankfully, he hadn’t let it show in front of Orentia, though his heart pounded so fiercely he nearly gave himself away.

When Dimidius entered his office acting dazed the whole time, Kilrun grabbed his shoulders and shook him.

“Your Grace! Your Grace! What’s the matter with you?”

Finally snapping back to his senses, Dimidius pulled out several crystal recordings that resembled brooches from his trouser pocket. It was time to examine them.

“You brought them after all! That’s truly fortunate, Your Grace.”

At Kilrun’s words, Dimidius activated the recording on one of the brooch-like crystals. The assassins’ movement paths appeared clearly in midair. Dimidius and Kilrun stared for a long while at the pitch-black night, the spread-out rice fields, and the streets.

Just as watching the recording began to feel tedious, the Empress finally appeared before their eyes. They’d worried that perhaps someone else—someone merely overseeing the assassins midway—might show up instead, so they were truly relieved.

In the recording, the Empress looked utterly venomous.

—You failed to kill the Grand Duke? And yet you dare return to the Imperial Palace in this state!

As the Empress raged furiously, the assassin wearing the crystal on his clothes spoke up.

—I felt I had to report on the assault on Grand Duke Manor. I am ashamed, Your Majesty. The northern gate was sealed shut, and though we breached the main gate, we failed.

—you didn’t happen to mention me in front of the Grand Duke, did you?

—Of course not. We are all indebted to Your Majesty. We’ve sworn to live our lives for you alone.

—Then you must die for me. All of you.

With those words, a blade flew toward the assassin wearing the crystal, and the Empress vanished from view. The assassins’ corpses were loaded onto a cart and sent out beyond the Imperial Palace. Only the creaking of the cart rolling through the darkness could be heard.
