“La Jin, did you post the picture?”
It was a conversation that ordinary lovers might have. La Jin extended her phone screen toward Kim Yujun, who wanted to see the picture.
“Why don’t you join in the photo? Shall I take it for you?”
“Taking pictures is my job. It’s enough to have just the food and the background.”
Thinking it was not a real date, La Jin refused to take a selfie. Then, she ate her dessert and waited for the right moment to get up.
“Hmm! It tastes good to eat syrup with ice cream.”
“Is it that good?”
“Do you want to try it?”
La Jin brought the dessert spoon to Yujun, overflowing with ice cream and syrup.
“Here. Try it.”
“Wasn’t I supposed to feed you?”
Doing everything, internally complaining, La Jin stretched out her arm. The white bear head melted in Kim Yujun’s mouth.
“It’s delicious.”
“Want more?”
“If you want to give.”
Considering the situation where the food she forced herself to swallow reached her throat, if Kim Yujun ate it for her, it was a relief. La Jin scraped the ice cream and offered it to Kim Yujun.
How well he ate, it was so strange compared to usual. What day was it today?
“Shall we order more a la carte?”
“No. I don’t like sweet things.”
Why does a person who doesn’t like sweets eat so well? Internally tut-tutting, La Jin smiled broadly. At this rate, she would get up in less than 10 minutes.
“This is something you give, so I’m eating it.”
La Jin looked at Kim Yujun, who was laughing like a boy.
‘What’s so good about me?’
The person who would surpass his suffering brother and become the head of the nation’s top company. Though he was rational, Kim Yujun, who was recognized for his good looks and abilities, what could be unsatisfactory? Even if he fell for La Jin’s appearance, there were celebrities who were prettier than her.
It’s not like she’s pleading with Kim Yujun, but what on earth is it for?
Could it be because of the words ‘It’s not Oppa’s fault’ from a long time ago?
La Jin recalled that day long ago.
Elegant music playing, laughter overflowing from people adorned in luxury at the Myungjin main house. Like a scene from a drama, the events of that day unfolded before La Jin’s eyes.
At that time, La Jin avoided unfamiliar people and wandered around near the glass greenhouse.
It wasn’t even a botanical garden, and there was a glass greenhouse in the house. At that time, it felt like she was walking in a dream.
‘If Yujun had been hurt instead of Chuljun Do-ryeonim, that would have been filial piety.’
‘I’d rather Yujun be dead and buried in Chairman-nim’s chest. This is like eating the insides of a silkworm pupa.’
People who praised Myungjin Group’s fate, words cursing Kim Yujun for surviving were casually heard.
‘That pious-looking widow blamed Yujun, crying. How could it have been so twisted?’
A person who liked to talk as if confirming an assassination blurted out. No matter how much she waited and waited, in the never-ending gossip, La Jin sat down on the grass field, fed up.
Tearing the closely grown grass with her hands while wandering around, at that moment, a large silhouette appeared in La Jin’s sight.
Whether it was right after crying or in the midst of suppressing anger, Yujun’s pupils were intensely red.
‘Oh!’
As if someone had been caught doing something significant, La Jin pretended not to see and hid her face. Then, Kim Yujun’s breath fluttered above La Jin’s head, and soon he was close.
‘It’s you.’
‘Me?’
‘The new sister that Ojonghyuk mentioned.’
When La Jin raised her head and looked, Kim Yujun’s eyes sparkled like jewels. Knowing that he cried, La Jin asked again, covering her face.
‘What are you doing here?’
‘I was admiring the flowers. I was bored……’
‘Sorry. I made you hear curses while you were admiring the flowers.’
‘Oh, no. Well, those people are mean. It’s not Oppa’s fault.’
Feeling the need to explain somehow, La Jin waved her hand, and Kim Yujun’s face tilted slightly.
‘I heard stories from my stepfather and mother. They said, “What can a person do about things done in the sky?”‘
‘…….’
‘Um, so, what I mean is… that’s an accident. It’s not Oppa’s fault.’
Even though it wasn’t deliberately caused, La Jin felt it was unfair for Kim Yujun to be treated as if he were a person who deserved to die. Perhaps that’s why. La Jin wanted to comfort Kim Yujun.
‘When our dad died. A grandmother I didn’t even know said that to me.’
‘…….’
‘I heard that nothing good happens when I was born. That I broke up a married couple, and even caused my dad’s death.’
The words that began as comfort suddenly surged over La Jin like a huge tidal wave.
Parents’ discord, father’s death. All were shouted as if it were La Jin’s fault. Statements like resembling her mom’s palm lines, being cautious of her stepfather, various words that she couldn’t swallow poured out. Remembering the words like a sharp knife, La Jin only shed tears.
‘We’re not gods. How can we hurt others and make them die?’
‘…….’
‘Talking nonsense, causing pain, saying bad things. People who do bad things should all be punished.’
When male lead is the homewrecker
“I know she doesn’t love him.”
I’ve read the novel below twice already. Girls, I’m highly recommending it to you!
The female lead? Not a good person.
The second male lead? Not a good person.
The male lead? Willingly plays the third party, breaking up the female and second male lead’s relationship despite all the warnings from his friends—so yeah, he’s definitely not a good person either.
Basically, nobody in this novel is simple-minded or without scheming.
The female lead starts off as the male lead’s secretary, but don’t worry—later on, she takes over the company while the male lead steps back to support her. He won’t steal her spotlight, overshadow her, or dull her shine.
I love novels where men are out here snatching wigs, tearing each other down, and going to war just to win the female lead’s affection. And this is exactly that kind of novel. Most of Hai Dai Ran’s works have this dynamic. You’ll see the male characters’ emotions being pushed to the absolute extreme.
There’s even a scene where the second male lead exposes the male lead online for being a homewrecker. The brotherhood immediately gangs up on him, dragging him through the mud. I find it compelling —it completely flips reality on its head, where usually, women are the ones fighting over a man and getting torn apart by the sisterhood.
For me, female leads in the novels I read should only struggle in their careers, not in love. But if the brainless romantics in the story are all men? I have zero complaints.
I’ve pretty much read all of Hai Dai Ran’s novels and even translated all of them—her works are just my thing. I’ll slowly upload everything here. One day, when my website is official, I hope I can invite her to join as one of the star authors.
