“Why meet? What for?”
Ra-jin couldn’t fathom why she should casually dine with Prosecutor Kang Ji-ho, especially after she had already turned him down decisively. She picked up her sandals and stood up from the stair, exhaling deeply.
“I’m really not in the mood to eat today.”
[If you don’t like eating, how about drinking?]Was it that obvious? She wasn’t fond of drinking, but today she felt a strong desire to indulge. The man seemed to have an uncanny knack for reading her mind, and his suggestion slightly swayed her. No, it considerably swayed her. However, Ra-jin wasn’t so out of her senses to drink with him.
After a tumultuous day, she could make an even bigger mistake by going out impulsively. Ra-jin resolved to go home and unwind with a cool glass of wine in a warm bath.
“Today, I’m just not feeling well.”
[How about tomorrow then?]“It feels like there’s another reason for this, whether it’s food or drinks.”
[Can’t I just want to congratulate you on your new drama?]Empty words.
A busy special prosecutor like him having leisure time to congratulate her on her new drama? There had to be an ulterior motive.
Ra-jin almost urged him to speak up, fearing his unnecessary honesty. One refusal was enough.

“I’ll think about it and get back to you.”
[I’ll wait.]He retreated as if he genuinely wanted to congratulate her. Ra-jin held her phone and sandals, walking barefoot down the stairs.
“Don’t get your hopes up too much.”
As she added that last remark, a chuckle came through the phone.
“Then, take care.”
After a brief and cheeky farewell, Ra-jin hung up. Freed from her pretty but impractical sandals, her legs no longer wobbled.
Moving the body does help clear a cluttered mind, she thought, as her rising breath pushed away the dizzying thoughts.
“Basement level 1.”
After catching her breath, Ra-jin put her sandals back on, adjusted her hair, and dusted off her hips. She pressed the heavy bar handle, and the hefty steel door creaked open.
Ra-jin peeked out through the glass, spotting the flickering orange lights. She grabbed her phone again.

“Please leave the door open for me. Right now.”
Hearing the car engine start, Ra-jin hurriedly ran towards the van with its driver’s partition pulled down.
Thanks to Sun Woo-jin’s consideration in blocking unnecessary attention, Ra-jin didn’t need to greet her manager separately. The unseen manager quickly closed the car door after she entered.
Zing, as the automatic door closed, Sun Woo-jin handed her a bottle of water.
“You’re making me curious. What’s going on with Director Jin Jae-yi?”
“I’ll repay you for your help today.”
Substituting his troublesome question with a polite reply, Sun Woo-jin chuckled. He always had a good sense.
“Where should I take you?”
Having set up his one-person agency, he moved the car even before she said her destination.
“If you don’t want to go home, just say so. I’ll entertain you all night.”

“That will get you in trouble with that person.”
“No one knows we’re dating. Anyway, you’re quick-witted.”
Their shared secret reasons led them to laugh and change the topic.
“Just type in the address.”
As Ra-jin entered her address on Sun Woo-jin’s phone, he forwarded it to his manager, and the car veered right.
“I’ll get you there safely. You owe me a meal.”
She could afford to buy him meals a dozen times over, including his secret girlfriend.
“I’ll treat you properly. Thanks a lot for today.”
Zing―.
In her dark bedroom, Ra-jin glanced at her ringing phone by the bed.

Recognizing the caller, Ra-jin flipped her phone back over.
“I don’t even want to hear his breathing, why is he calling this early in the morning?”
Ra-jin was irked that Oh Jong-hyuk, whom she still considered an unwelcome intrusion in her life, was calling. Why couldn’t he just text if he had something to say? Why a call when they weren’t that close?
After a night accompanied by two movies and a bottle of white wine, she had fallen asleep late. Why wake her up now? Ra-jin rolled her feet in annoyance.
“Why! I don’t even have a schedule today!”
She yelled at the persistently ringing phone and then finally checked the time.
A perfect 9 am for rolling around in bed.
When the call finally ended, Ra-jin patted her thick pillow, settled into a comfortable position, and slowly closed her eyes, thinking ‘this is it, this is it.’ That’s when the phone rang again.
“Ah! Really.”
Why is he doing this? We’re not even close siblings.
Turning off the phone would be simple, but blatantly avoiding Oh Jong-hyuk’s calls could be problematic. She already risked upsetting her stepbrother, which could lead to him refusing requests regarding their mother. So, Ra-jin was timidly avoiding his calls, pretending to be asleep.

“Woke me up completely. Let’s take a bath.”
Ignoring the phone’s relentless ringing, Ra-jin sprung out of bed.
She had enjoyed a half-body bath the previous night, but she started running water again to shake off the lingering effects of alcohol.
