Patricia sat at her desk in the study, gazing out at the garden beyond the window. Most of the trees in the garden were short ornamental flowering trees. Bare black branches, stripped of flowers and leaves, had turned into black wires scratching at her chest.

She thought she should plant winter trees—ones that remained sturdily green even in the cold.

She wrote a brief letter to Isabella.

She asked Isabella to host the afternoon tea with noble young ladies, originally scheduled for the Botanic Garden, instead at Boras Palace.

After writing that far, Patricia picked up her pen and hesitated briefly.

She added that she wanted to know the schedule of Isabella’s personal physician and requested an appointment for herself as well.

Isabella’s personal physician was the only female doctor in the empire, affiliated with the Imperial Hospital.

Ever since Patricia had traveled to Tane for the wedding, she’d suffered from nausea; familiar scents and smells now irritated and sickened her. At first, she’d blamed it on long-distance carriage sickness, but realizing she’d skipped two menstrual cycles made it clear.

If the perceptive Eva had been by her side, she would have noticed immediately—but Annie was clueless about such matters.

Though she could summon a palace doctor through the chief maid, doing so would send news straight to Har Chen and the Empress Dowager.

Lately, whenever alone, she’d developed the habit of resting her hand on her stomach.

Perhaps due to certainty, she felt an unfamiliar pulse beating strongly—not just her own heartbeat, but another fluttering rhythm. It was mysterious.

How overjoyed Har Chen would be when he learned of this.

Yet she disliked speaking of uncertain matters.
