Count Luken received the expedition order handed to him by Har Chen.

The count asked his aide whether he had any documents on hand to verify the emperor’s handwriting.

The aide pulled out a folder he always carried tucked under his arm and retrieved from the stack a document annotated with Kazan’s handwritten instructions.

Count Luken laid the document received from his aide side by side with the expedition order, compared the handwriting, and then walked over to the group seated as adjudicators of this impromptu tribunal.

They slowly compared the two documents’ handwriting, passing them around and reading carefully. After examining both, they unanimously nodded in agreement, confirming and acknowledging the handwriting was identical.

Kazan could not believe this absurd turn of events.

This was his own palace—the Gracia Hall—where he had intended to hold a banquet celebrating his empress consort’s birthday.

Yet here sat those insignificant nobles he’d never acknowledged, those lowborn bastards unregistered in any noble house, and even the dukes who had kissed Kazan’s feet just to secure the kingdom’s surrender in the war against the Tane Empire—all now sitting upright, shoulders squared, heads held high.

Moreover, several high-ranking nobles renowned in the capital had already shifted their seats, either moving toward Patrick’s entourage or relocating to the center.

Around Kazan remained only a few of his closest aides, Duke Pars, and Prince Chris; the rest of the chairs stood conspicuously empty.

At least the royal guards and security knights stood arrayed in double ranks, swords in hand. Kazan glanced sideways at their blades—they were real swords, not ceremonial ones, just as he had ordered.

“Chris, what is the meaning of this?”

“This is a rebellion.”

This was not the kind of rebellion Kazan had imagined.

Power should be asserted with overwhelming force, crushing opponents with an iron blade.
