Patricia drew her sword and slashed through the air while observing the three men. The men were surprised. They failed to notice that she was calculating the space with the dazzling movement of her sword.

So the men were holding swords but were not formally trained swordsmen. If they were formally knighted swordsmen, they would have secured their own space with their swords simultaneously when Patricia drew hers.

The men were assassins with daggers hidden in their bosoms.

“Not bad, they came prepared. Have your way with that sword-wielding wench. But make sure to end her life.”

Pamila said leisurely while twirling her red hair with her index finger, then abruptly turned away. Through Pamila’s words, it was confirmed that the assassins were unaware of Patricia’s identity.

“I am the Empress of the Carsic Empire. You cannot kill me. Lower your swords.”

“Hehe, they said her mind had gone crazy, and now she claims to be the Empress.”

“If you’re the Empress, are you saying you’re the wife of Emperor Harchen?”

Patricia threw off her black robe, flinging it at the face of the man charging towards her, and swiftly chased after Pamila.

“Pamila Lasbur!”

She was as fast as the wind.

“Queen consort of Emperor Kazan. The notorious villainess who poisoned my mother.”

As Pamila turned around, Patricia’s sword sliced through her red hair.

“Take my sword.”

Red hair and fresh blood stained the white dress crimson.

“Aah! S-save me.”

Patricia glanced at the man supporting the Queen consort who had slumped to the ground, then ran with all her might towards Eva.

Eva, run away, just hold on a little longer.

She swung her sword at the large man blocking her path. As expected, the man only parried and dodged with his sword, while wielding a dagger he pulled from his bosom.

Patricia quickly struck at the man’s openings with her sword as she approached.

Clang clang clang.

The man’s sword could not properly block Patricia’s. The man actually widened the distance by stepping back.

Once there was some distance, he held three daggers and threw them swish, swish, swish. One of the three aimed at Patricia’s shoulder and struck.

Her shoulder felt like it was on fire. Patricia gripped her sword in her left hand and ran towards Eva, deflecting the daggers the man threw.

Eva gritted her teeth to avoid screaming so Patricia wouldn’t look at her. She didn’t make even the slightest sound. Daggers were embedded in Eva’s leg and side.

“Eva……!”

A man rushed at Eva who was sprawled on the dirt ground. The man was stabbing Eva’s hand with a dagger to snatch away the necklace she was clutching.

Amidst this, Eva did not scream. Patricia swung her sword at the man’s arm. In that instant, a dagger flew towards Patricia’s calf. Patricia collapsed.

‘Ah, Risha, my princess.’

Eva clenched her teeth, but her grip loosened with a slip as the man brought down his dagger. The man picked up the diamond necklace from Eva’s hand.

And then the man suddenly collapsed onto Eva’s body.

A white bird flew in from somewhere.

Eva forced her eyelids open with all her might as they were closing. So even as she was losing consciousness, Eva saw clearly. The men fell one by one, struck by arrows that flew in with the white bird.

*

“Depart.”

After confirming that three burly men got out of Pamila’s carriage, Julia had the carriage depart. The coachman John remembered the woman’s request and immediately pulled on the reins. Julia shuddered at the sight of the men’s backs, who had been threatening just by their presence.

She had witnessed the men’s skills yesterday.

Shortly after departing from Duse Palace with Emperor Kazan’s party, Pamila had changed carriages.

After arranging to meet up with the Tane knights remaining on the outskirts of the capital in Trier, she came straight to the Leak mansion with Duke Parse.

Julia and Pamila, who had returned after having an audience with the Empress at White Palace, met the three assassins they were introduced to in the forest behind the mansion.

Pamila wanted to verify their skills. The men moved so fast in front of Duke Parse, Julia, and Pamila that they were almost invisible.

They threw daggers at fleeing rabbits, flying birds, and slithering snakes. The sharply honed daggers pierced through birds’ wings, rabbits’ hind legs, and snakes’ heads.

Julia watched with a frown as red blood splattered. She felt nauseous and disgusted. It was cruel and vulgar.

In truth, Julia didn’t want to be involved in luring the Empress from Epi Street to the gold mine in Kaosan. But she had no choice.

Julia suggested that Pamila need not go herself, and that if she gave her the necklace, she would hand it over to the assassins right away on Epi Street.

Pamila recalled Patricia who had come with Harchen the day before the wedding, glaring at her with her mouth tightly shut, and felt her anger rising.

At the wedding reception, when dancing the waltz with Patrick, she was burning with the desire to get rid of them both at once. The naive prince, Chris, followed Patrick, treating him like family.

Pamila trembled, clenching her fists as she recalled Patrick’s detestable voice whispering in her ear.

“You should cut back on using poison on His Majesty.”

“You know, don’t you? What will happen to the Queen consort’s position if His Majesty passes away now.”

‘Patrick, you fox. Yes, hear about the death of Patricia whom you cherish like your own flesh and suffer.’

“I need to see it myself to feel satisfied.”

Julia did not want to see the daggers thrown by the men pierce the Empress’s body. She was not that cruel.

Once this was all over, she would return to being the bright and graceful Julia of before.

She would maintain an elegant and refined attitude while comforting the Emperor who had lost his Empress.

‘By the Emperor’s side, eventually… hah.’

The carriage came to a stop. Julia lifted the curtain of the carriage window and peered outside. It was behind the Secret Lady building on Epi Street. She opened the window connecting to the coachman’s seat.

“Why stop here?”

“My lady. My stomach is growling, so I’ll quickly use the privy.”

“Ugh, how filthy. Hurry back.”

Julia lowered the window curtain and quickly fanned herself with her fan. She closed her eyes and tried to recall memories of Harchen from her childhood to calm her mind.

When he was young, Harchen wasn’t as cold as he is now. After swinging wooden swords as tall as Calip and herself, he would tilt his head back to drink from the water canteen Julia offered.

“Thank you, Julia.”

Yes. That’s how kindly he used to call her name. They danced the waltz together at the Tane Academy graduation party.

‘His strong arms wrapped around my waist.’

As Julia gnawed on the lace hanging from the end of her fan, indulging in pleasant reminiscence, Mina crawled under the carriage.

Mina was returning after receiving her mother’s herbs from Old Man Chen in Oro Alley when she saw the familiar purple carriage come to a stop on Epi Street.

The coachman who got down from the driver’s seat clutching his stomach went around the outer wall of the Secret Lady building.

Mina recalled Madam Lulu’s offer to become her designer. The wages Madam offered were at least five times what she earned working at the restaurant. It would be enough for the three of them – Lena, her mother, and herself – to live on.

But if she caught the eye of the Leak lady, she would be lucky to end up in prison. The lady wouldn’t even hand them over to the guard.

Without realizing it, Mina rummaged through her pocket and took out a sugar cube to put in the horse’s mouth. It was something she had saved from the restaurant for her mother who took bitter herbs.

She crawled under the carriage and took out silk thread, which was one of the materials she received from Madam Lulu, and wrapped it around and between the carriage wheels. She tangled it up haphazardly. After using up an entire spool of silk thread, she tugged on it. It was taut enough to make a clanging sound against the metal.

She came out from under the carriage and climbed the uphill road leading to the Leak mansion.

John, the Leak family’s coachman, couldn’t use the bathroom in the fancy building on Epi Street, so he went to a public restroom. He calmly gathered his thoughts in the cramped space.

That woman was definitely the Empress. Even in an urgent situation, she calmly gave him instructions and promised to take care of his descendants.

But what if she died in the meantime?

It would mean revealing his face to the Imperial Knights and he might have to explain himself. There was no way the lady would allow that.

Above all, there was no way a frail woman could withstand three burly men in a remote place.

John left the bathroom and briefly glanced at the Imperial Knights sitting at a cafe terrace watching the building across the street as he passed through Epi Street, then shook his head and returned to the carriage.

He drove the carriage past Epi Street and onto the road on the opposite side of the lake.

As they climbed a steep slope and turned onto a secluded path, the horse struggled and reared up on its hind legs. He cracked his whip.

His chest was already tight. He cracked the whip hard enough to feel relieved, and the horse that had been using all its strength moved in a zigzag pattern before exhaling roughly.

Suddenly there was a chilling sound from the carriage wheels, followed by something snapping.

“Ahhh! Coachman! What’s wrong with the carriage?”

The carriage lost balance and immediately tumbled down the steep cliff.

*

A white bird flew dizzily before her eyes. Sunlight poured in between the flapping of wings. The sound of flowing water could be heard from somewhere.

Patricia barely lifted her thick eyelashes.

Cold.

All the large front windows were open, letting in cold wind. Through her blurry vision, she saw a man standing amidst a flock of white birds.

Patricia tried to get up, but contrary to her will, her eyelids, heavy as if dusted with sunlight, slowly closed.

When she opened her eyes again, a man with silver hair tinged with blue was sitting in a chair by the bedside looking down at her.

“Are you awake?”

“Who are you?”

Patricia’s mind was clear, but she couldn’t raise her body. She felt a stabbing pain somewhere in her body.

“I don’t know Imperial etiquette. I’m Bark, captain of the Heun clan hunters.”

“Heun clan hunters? Where is this? Ah, Eva, where is Eva? The Queen consort, Pamila?”

Patricia tried to get up but her forehead automatically furrowed from the pain.

Seeing this, the man walked over to a table on one side of the room and brought a glass of water. He was wearing a white shirt over white pants, with all the shirt buttons undone.

He came to Patricia’s bedside and supported her shoulder to help her sit up.

He put the glass to her lips and slowly tilted it. Feeling her throat cracked and parched, Patricia slowly drank the glass of water.

“I am the Empress of the Carsic Empire. Show proper respect first.”

Bark coldly grabbed the white bird perched on top of his head and released it out the window.

“What kind of respect should I show?”

“First, button up that shirt. And explain the current situation to me.”

“This is ridiculous.”

Bark crossed his arms and looked at Patricia, brushing back his silver hair tinged with blue.

Male lead fell into her trap — and shattered when she walked away

This is also on my reread list!

This one is a slow burn, but when it burns, it burns hard.

Definitely worth a read, y’all!

The story follows a thousand-year-old seductive spirit who, on a bet, sets out to charm the male lead—a once-promising but unfortunate cultivator.

But just when she succeeds in making him fall for her, she heartlessly leaves, driving him to madness.

Determined to find her at all costs, he captures her, keeping her by his side no matter what, even if she hates him.

I love this kind of trope—I enjoy watching the male lead suffer in agony.

The ending drags a bit with unnecessary filler, but that’s fine.

As long as I enjoy the beginning, I’m good.
