Eden quickly scanned the square and the buildings surrounding it. The inn, various shops, and buildings of unknown purpose had dozens of windows.

Behind those windows and curtains, there could be Hoon clan hunters aiming arrows. Eden lowered his hand to his side to grab his sword and signaled with his eyes to Kin, who was waiting at the 10 o’clock position.

“I’ve never seen you before. How do you know me?”

“I don’t know the proper way to greet. Hello, Princess of Tane.”

“Princess? Do you perhaps know Patricia?”

The boy rested his elbows on the fountain steps again, watching the water split, and recited in a low voice.

“At 4 o’clock, third floor of the inn behind the green curtain, a man with no weapons. At 6 o’clock, on the roof of the hat shop, I’m not sure about weapons. At 10 o’clock on the outer wall, a man in a black robe with a sword inside. Straight ahead at 12 o’clock, the fruit shop owner, he’s one of Boss Binen’s men but betrays as easily as drinking water.”

The man at 10 o’clock that the boy mentioned was Eden’s subordinate, Kin. The other three were unknown to Eden and Patrick.

No flocks of white birds were flying around. There were no Hoon clan hunters, and one of them must have been sent by the Empress.

Eden was amazed at the boy’s observational skills in pinpointing the specific locations and weapons of the watchers, but they couldn’t waste time here.

“My lord. We should move.”

“Eden, keep an eye on the rooftop at 6 o’clock.”

“Yes.”

“You, what’s your name?”

“Jet. No surname.”

“Jet, how do you know Patricia?”

“Two months ago, she was sitting here. In strange attire. And now she’s become the Empress of the Karsik Empire, right?”

“The person you saw was indeed Patricia. She’s my twin. I am Crown Prince Patrick.”

“I’ve heard about that too. Twins. Oh, Your Highness the Crown Prince, ah, hello.”

“Now that I’ve revealed my identity, guide me to Binen.”

“I can’t do that. If you give me proof or a mark that you’re the Crown Prince, I’ll deliver it to the boss. And tell me which inn you’re staying at.”

Eden shook his head at Patrick. A signal not to trust.

Patrick thought for a moment, then removed the Crown Prince’s ring engraved with the Tane royal crest from his middle finger. Patrick took out three gold coins from his robe pocket and gave them to the boy along with the ring.

“The ring must be returned. The gold coins are payment for your errand.”

“Ah, your grace is as vast as the sky. Where are you staying?”

“Next to the fruit shop, third floor.”

“Yes, I’ll run like an arrow.”

After the boy disappeared, Patrick and Eden sat a while longer before entering the inn. Binen arrived even before Kin could move his position to the inn.

Binen was a head taller than the tall Eden, and his shoulders and chest were as massive as hardened mud. He had a long, deep scar from beside his eye across his cheekbone to his mouth, making him look fierce at first glance.

Eden tightened his grip on his sword the moment Binen knocked loudly on the inn door and stepped inside.

“I am Binen, it’s unusual for His Highness the Crown Prince to seek out a lowly person like me.”

He held out his large clenched fist to Patrick. As Patrick calmly tried to remove his glove and extend his hand to grasp Binen’s, Eden stepped closer.

When Binen opened his fist, Patrick’s Crown Prince ring lay in his hand, as rough and large as a field. Patrick picked up the ring and shook Binen’s hand.

“Nice to meet you, Binen. I wanted to see you.”

Binen stayed at Patrick’s inn for 6 hours. Binen had never met anyone who tortured him with such a tedious feast of words in his life.

“Binen, I will become the Emperor of Tane. The first thing I will proclaim during my reign is the independence of Tane’s seven principalities and the absorbed ethnic groups.”

“Why do something that loses out?”

“It’s not a loss. Most of the grand dukes dispatched to manage the principalities are corrupt and create double ledgers for their own benefit… Tane is also wasting a lot of blood money to maintain useless troops.”

Patrick explained step by step about the future of the Tane Empire he wanted to build, and collaboration with the Karsik Empire’s Emperor for peace on the Arkan continent.

“If it’s politics, it’s boring.”

Binen yawned, holding back as long as he could, and even shed tears.

Accustomed to violent language and behavior, Binen dozed off and woke up repeatedly to Patrick’s calm voice explaining point by point.

He nodded along to Patrick’s lullaby explaining politics and continental law-making, briefly focusing his eyes when told that an emperor ruling an empire should have politics and policies, not a sword.

“So what are you asking me to do?”

“I want you to testify that you illegally and forcibly took children and powerless poor women to send them to the Garnet mines in the Torun Kingdom.”

“Ah, I didn’t do it forcibly, but legitimately…”

“Have you ever been to the mining sites in the Torun Kingdom?”

“No.”

Embarrassed, Binen rubbed his face with his thick hand.

“Eden here observed for 24 hours inside and came out to explain to me, and it was deplorable. It’s not legitimate. When hiring workers, the content of work, wages, and environment should be mutually agreed upon. Currently, it’s not legally regulated, but I will definitely create that during my reign.”

Patrick explained to Binen about the stone walls erected at the Garnet mines in Torun and the violence and evil working conditions behind those walls.

“You should feel guilty. Also, I’m not trying to punish you. Every empire has its back alleys. I’m not trying to eliminate the entire flow of pleasure and corrupt money, but there is a line that must be kept… The minimum basic human rights must be guaranteed.”

“……”

“We will have active exchanges with the Karsik Empire. We’ll lay railroads, and Luken will become a border city at the center of more active trade and transportation… Injustice and corruption will occur exponentially.”

At some point, Binen started nodding off again. Patrick instructed Eden to bring strong tea. Binen pinched his own thigh with his hand and later slapped his own cheeks to stay awake.

“Binen, I’ll entrust you with the alley security and protection of Luken.”

“Ah, so. If I testify about deceiving and capturing children and women and handing them over to the Lasbur merchant group, you’ll overlook my crimes and make me the boss to keep this alley from stinking, right?”

“That’s right.”

“Why explain it so complicatedly, let’s do it.”

“Then, you’ll testify?”

“I may be ignorant, but if the empire changes as you say, Your Highness, won’t it be a world where the imperial citizens can live better than the nobles?”

“I’ll strive for it.”

Binen bent his large frame in front of the chair where the small and slender Patrick sat, then knelt down.

“Please make sure you do.”

“Thank you. Let’s meet at Count Retman’s territory on the appointed day.”

After Binen noted the time and place that Eden emphasized again, he left the inn.

For the first time in his life, he thought that even a person as delicate as a woman could look cool as he descended the stairs. The boy waiting at the landing silently followed Binen.

Binen stopped and turned around.

“Jet, you serve His Highness the Crown Prince until I go to Count Retman’s territory in ten days.”

“Boss, really?”

The boy clenched his fists with an expectant face and stood on his tiptoes.

“Hide or report and join as you wish. Be of help to His Highness the Crown Prince.”

“Yes, boss.”

The boy called Jet, wrapped in a robe, observed the surroundings on the first floor of the inn before climbing the inn stairs again.

Patrick wiped his face and neck with the hot towel Eden handed him, then leaned back on the sofa.

“My lord. Get some sleep. We leave for Karsik tomorrow.”

“Eden, let’s not go to Karsik but to the capital. Let’s take the train from here to Burk Central Station.”

“The train? I remember it took a full two days. If we take the train, we can’t avoid exposing our identity.”

Patrick was encouraged that Binen’s matter had ended more easily than expected.

“Rather than wasting time in Karsik, let’s just move.”

“It’s dangerous to move while exposing ourselves now. If the Empress’s side finds out that you’ve moved to the capital, they’ll pursue immediately.”

“I think we need to meet Administrator Zenon in Nyx Prison in Burk.”

“It won’t be easy.”

“Eden, can’t we look into Zenon’s embezzlement of public funds again through your brother?”

“It’s Jayden. He would have stuck to principles like a tightly packed sausage. The Empress’s side probably set a trap for Zenon in the first place.”

“The charges against Duke Parse aren’t clear. There’s suspicion of collusion with the Empress, but.”

“My lord, how about going to Retman instead? The Retman Count’s family said they would investigate Duke Parse, so maybe something has come up?”

Retman was the Retman Count’s territory, an hour away from Tane’s capital.

Currently, it was the hideout of Count Retman, Count Akaban, the illegitimate son of Marquis Romaier, and other viscounts and barons, or their heirs.

Those who shared Patrick’s vision for rebuilding Tane gathered while he attended the academy.

Of course, not everyone’s opinions aligned, but they unanimously agreed on eradicating royal corruption, deposing the current Emperor, and punishing the Empress.

“Alright, then let’s go to Retman.”

Eden again advised Patrick to get some sleep while the carriage was being prepared.

“I can sleep on the way. More importantly, shouldn’t we send separate letters to Harchen and Patricia?”

“Yes, my lord. I think it would be better if Empress Patricia doesn’t come to Tane.”

“I think so too. I hope Harchen will cooperate.”

“The Emperor is a bit, but cooperation with the Karsik Empire is necessary on our side to show a strong backing to the imperial citizens.”

“Why the Emperor? I’m a bit worried. Remember when Risha first went to Karsik and poison soup was served at the banquet with the Empress Dowager. Who on earth was behind that?”

Knock knock knock.

At the cautious knocking sound, Eden gripped his sword and approached the door.

“Who is it?”

“It’s me, Jet.”

When the door opened, Boss Binen’s boy entered.

“What brings you here?”

“The boss sent me. He said to be of help to His Highness the Crown Prince, please take me to Retman too.”

“Did you eavesdrop?”

Eden grabbed the boy’s arm tightly.

When male lead is the homewrecker

“I know she doesn’t love him.”

I’ve read the novel below twice already. Girls, I’m highly recommending it to you!

The female lead? Not a good person.
The second male lead? Not a good person.
The male lead? Willingly plays the third party, breaking up the female and second male lead’s relationship despite all the warnings from his friends—so yeah, he’s definitely not a good person either.

Basically, nobody in this novel is simple-minded or without scheming.

The female lead starts off as the male lead’s secretary, but don’t worry—later on, she takes over the company while the male lead steps back to support her. He won’t steal her spotlight, overshadow her, or dull her shine.

I love novels where men are out here snatching wigs, tearing each other down, and going to war just to win the female lead’s affection. And this is exactly that kind of novel. Most of Hai Dai Ran’s works have this dynamic. You’ll see the male characters’ emotions being pushed to the absolute extreme.

There’s even a scene where the second male lead exposes the male lead online for being a homewrecker. The brotherhood immediately gangs up on him, dragging him through the mud. I find it compelling —it completely flips reality on its head, where usually, women are the ones fighting over a man and getting torn apart by the sisterhood.

For me, female leads in the novels I read should only struggle in their careers, not in love. But if the brainless romantics in the story are all men? I have zero complaints.

I’ve pretty much read all of Hai Dai Ran’s novels and even translated all of them—her works are just my thing. I’ll slowly upload everything here. One day, when my website is official, I hope I can invite her to join as one of the star authors.

Here’s the story synopsis:

One-line summary: She is his lifelong obsession, to the point where he was willing to be a third wheel, scorned by society, just to wedge his way into her relationship with her fiancé.
