Caesar growled as he swept aside the bundle of papers Latifa had used for handwriting practice with his large front paw.

[It’s for the same reason I haven’t taken anything from the savanna since I was captured and brought here by you.]

“What do you mean?”

[All those memories are eating away at me, Latifa—the color of the savanna sky, how hot the sun-baked rocks were, the scent of dry grass.]

“Eating away at you?”

[Your homeland will sicken you and bind your ankles. In the end, it’ll leave you unable to move forward or back—just like me before I met you, dying a wretched death because I couldn’t forget the past.]

Having said that, Caesar perked up his ears, flashed his yellow eyes, then swiftly turned his head and let out a loud roar toward the windowsill.

—Kwaaaang!

Startled by Caesar’s roar, Latifa stepped backward. When Caesar roared once more toward the windowsill, something brown and bulky suddenly fluttered into the room.

—Kiyoot!

“Aaah!”

Latifa jumped up, clutching a cushion, at the sudden intruder from the sky. Caesar remained still, merely tracking it with his yellow eyes.

She hesitated, then looked carefully upward—it was a large bird.

“A vulture? A hawk?”

She didn’t know the difference well, but a brown bird of prey perched on a high beam, watching Caesar warily while looking down at Latifa.
