Hagnu gazed with hazy eyes at a pair of crowned parrots pecking at bread crumbs on the table, as if dreaming of them preening each other’s neck feathers.

“There was another reason I became a concubine besides protecting Hades and Luhan. I’m more worthless and selfish than you think. I’m truly not strong at all—the kind of person unworthy of standing beside the honorable Caleb.”

A transparent, watery glimmer shimmered in Hagnu’s eyes, as if tears might fall at any moment, yet none ever did.

“Hades kept trying to stop me from becoming a concubine. He said I’d go mad if I entered the Sultan’s harem while holding feelings for someone else. That I’d be trapped forever in this vast palace, living alone.”

“That’s why I believe you’d be more than enough for him. My older brother, my sister—even Yanan would think so too.”

“I… how could someone like me possibly…”

She grasped Latifa’s hand and gently stroked the back of it.

“You’re surely a stronger woman than I am. You saved Iota against the raging Hades at the Sultan’s trial and even persuaded that stubborn Karina.”

Upon hearing her words, Latifa realized those deeds were unlike taming lions or releasing animals—they were somewhat removed from her secret abilities.
