As always, Suhel, who had finished preparing early, was eating alone when he summoned Emil.

“You called, Your Majesty?”

“Has Lady Ivenel risen yet?”

“Ah… should I say she has risen?”

His gaze turned toward Emil at the ambiguous reply. Even though his eyes clearly demanded a clearer answer, she had no choice but to respond that way.

“The maidservant said she wasn’t in her room when she went to check.”

Apparently, without even calling for her maidservant, she had prepared herself alone and already left the palace. Hearing this, even Emil couldn’t help but be flustered.

Since no one had seen Ivenel, it meant she had awakened earlier than even the servants. Just where on earth had she gone so early?

Seeing his silence, Emil hastily bowed her head.

“I’m sorry. You instructed me to keep a close watch. I’ll search for her immediately.”

“No. I think I know where she went.”

With those words, Suhel rose from his seat and headed straight out of the palace. He recalled the story Demil had told him yesterday.

She had challenged the knights and seized the training grounds by her own strength. It felt as though he’d been caught off guard and struck hard.

‘I never imagined she’d win so easily.’

He’d always prided himself on the fact that his knight order was second to none in skill—something achieved through daily, intense training.

Yet all that effort had been undone in an instant like this.

Suhel changed his direction from heading to his office and instead made his way toward the knights’ training grounds. If it was Ivenel, she’d surely be there.

Besides, he had something he needed to tell her anyway.

However, for some reason, a crowd of knights had gathered near the entrance, staring blankly at one spot, oblivious even to his approach.

“What’s going on?”

“Your Majesty.”

Ignoring the knights bowing toward him, Suhel looked toward the training grounds. Only then did he notice the figure previously hidden from view.

Ivenel was silently running there.

With her hair tied back neatly, dressed in black training attire, and even wearing a pistol at her waist, she looked like she could easily be mistaken for a knight herself.

Sweat already glistened heavily on her face—no one knew how many laps she’d already run.

“How long has she been here?”

“She’s been running like that since before we arrived.”

It was Demil who answered Suhel’s question.

The knights themselves had never expected someone to arrive earlier than they did, so they’d been watching in bewildered confusion.

Ivenel, who had paused briefly to catch her breath, finally noticed the eyes fixed on her and calmly walked forward.

“How long have you been here? Good morning.”

Despite her cheerful greeting, no one replied. To be precise, they simply didn’t know how they should respond.

After all, just yesterday they’d faced off as adversaries.

Then Suhel stepped forward ahead of everyone and asked,

“What are you doing?”

“It’s obvious, isn’t it? I’m just doing a light run before breakfast. It seems my stamina is quite lacking.”

For her, training early in the morning was an utterly familiar routine. She simply hadn’t done it until now due to a lack of motivation.

Physical conditioning was necessary for marksmanship, and given the special circumstances of facing monsters, it was all the more essential.

Running enough to break a sweat after so long actually left her feeling refreshed.

“Emil brought me these clothes yesterday. They fit perfectly.”

Even to Suhel’s eyes, she looked far more natural in this outfit than in a dress—as if this were her true self.

“Oh, and I received the pistol as well. Have you come to train too, Your Majesty?”

“I have something to tell you.”

Noticing the questioning look in her eyes, Suhel quickly scanned the surroundings. Demil caught on and led the knights away to give the two some privacy.

Once the area was clear, he calmly informed her of the decision made yesterday, watching her reaction closely.

“It’ll be tight in two weeks, but I understand. I’ll prepare as well.”

“Is that all you have to say?”

She didn’t ask further questions about the hunt and accepted it so readily that Suhel couldn’t help but ask. Of course, regardless of what she said, the decision wouldn’t be reversed.

“Yes. After all, that was the condition for me staying here—to assist you whenever needed.”

From Ivenel’s perspective, his reaction seemed even stranger. He’d personally negotiated this arrangement precisely for such a moment, so why ask her that now?

To Suhel, however, she appeared to be taking things too lightly, so he decided to state the harsh reality plainly.

“Hunting isn’t the same as fighting a single monster. Out there, anything could happen—and in the worst case, you might die. Even a capable young lady like you isn’t an exception.”

To her, his words sounded like this:

Even if such a thing happened, he wouldn’t save her. She’d have to survive on her own strength alone.

But Ivenel wasn’t unaware of that herself. She knew well that the only one who could protect her was herself.

“Of course I understand that. And I’m prepared to accept whatever happens out there.”

Her resolve was unmistakably clear to him as well. It was fortunate, at least, that he wouldn’t need to waste his breath on unnecessary nagging.

“By the way, I heard you had a match right after arriving yesterday.”

“You heard from Sir Demil, I suppose. Thanks to that, I can now use the grounds so confidently. It was quite beneficial for me too.”

Suhel could sense Ivenel’s confidence.

“So you knew from the start that you’d win.”

“I certainly never intended to lose. Ah—but that’s absolutely not meant to belittle the knights’ skills. Sir Shan’s ability was truly impressive. Besides, knights don’t rely solely on marksmanship.”

She was merely stating the facts as they were. Shan had exceptionally solid fundamentals—and the entire knight order was surely the same.

“I happened to see Duke Istella’s knights training once, and they were truly terrible.”

“With marksmanship, there’s inevitably a gap compared to Aodin. After all, we’ve continuously researched ways to fight monsters.”

In contrast, Aodin, grown complacent in peaceful times and making no preparations, had naturally met its current fate.

Remembering something he needed to confirm regarding the upcoming hunt, Suhel asked her,

“Just to be sure—do you know how to ride a horse?”

“A horse? No.”

Ivenel shook her head, flustered. There was no way she could ride a horse. In her previous life, even seeing one in person had been rare.

“Given the tight schedule, we’ll be traveling on horseback. The route cuts through forests and mountain ranges, making carriages impossible.”

“What should I do, then? I’ve never ridden a horse before.”

“You can handle a gun but can’t ride a horse?”

“Anything unknown can be learned. I’m quite confident in my ability to learn.”

Ivenel showed strong determination. Since there was still time, she could learn before then.

“I wonder if there’s anyone suitable to teach you.”

Though it might sound cold, Suhel’s words weren’t wrong.

Everyone was already frustrated they couldn’t get rid of her—would anyone really volunteer to teach her? Ivenel agreed with that point as well.

“That’s certainly true. Hmm… though two people who could reliably teach me do come to mind.”

“Who are they?”

“Sir Demil—and you, Your Majesty.”

She first pointed toward Demil standing far off, then turned her hand toward Suhel. Seeing that gesture, his brow furrowed.

Was she truly serious?

“You’re asking me to teach you personally?”

“I brought it up myself, but I thought it was probably unreasonable.”

When Ivenel gave an awkward smile, Suhel, though exasperated, wanted to hear why she’d thought of them.

“Why specifically Demil and me?”

“Among everyone in Caries, you’re the ones I’ve spoken with the most, and I think you’d be able to teach me efficiently within the limited time. I don’t want to waste precious time on pointless friction.”

Though her decision was objectively sound, she had no intention of insisting on it stubbornly.

“Your Majesty can assign whoever you deem appropriate. I don’t particularly mind who it is.”

“I’ll assign Sir Demil.”

He followed her suggestion less out of compliance and more because he somewhat understood her reasoning. He didn’t want this matter to cause delays in their schedule either.

“Thank you. I’ll definitely learn properly before we depart.”

Ivenel mentally outlined her upcoming training plan. Physical conditioning, marksmanship practice, and now horseback riding—it was certain to keep her very busy.

“Oh, by the way—is there anywhere in the imperial palace that’s restricted? Any place I shouldn’t go?”

“As long as it doesn’t specifically interfere with training or official duties, there aren’t any such places.”

“I see. The knights need to train as well, so I’ll take my leave now.”

Having obtained all the information she needed, Ivenel immediately left the training grounds. Suhel’s gaze naturally followed her retreating figure.

It felt as though an unexpected storm had swept through since morning.

Now able to return to the palace without getting lost, Ivenel changed out of her clothes and washed away her sweat.

She still felt awkward about being waited on by others. Thus, for anything she could manage alone, she preferred not to rely on anyone else’s help.

As she stepped outside after changing clothes, she happened to run into Emil.

“Where have you been, Lady Ivenel? You left without a word—I was startled.”

“Oh, sorry. I went to the training grounds. I’m more comfortable moving around alone, so don’t worry about it. I don’t particularly need the maidservants’ help either.”

Remembering Lia, whom she hadn’t seen since yesterday, she asked,

“By the way, where’s Lia?”

“She’s probably working with the other maidservants.”

Hearing that, she decided to postpone visiting Lia. She didn’t want to disrupt her work, nor did she want to unintentionally worsen others’ impressions of her.

“I see.”

“I’ll escort you to the dining hall.”

“Thanks. I was just getting hungry.”

Emil led her to the dining hall within the imperial palace. Until now, she’d only eaten in her room, so this was her first time dining here.

“Your meal will be served shortly.”

“Ah, is there a place where I can read books? I realize I know almost nothing about this place.”

What Ivenel needed most urgently was information about her surroundings. For her future sake, she absolutely had to learn about Caries.

“There’s a library within the palace. There’s also a book repository here.”

“A repository? May I use it?”

“Yes, important documents and books are stored separately, so it’s fine.”

After Emil left, as Ivenel considered eating and then briefly visiting the repository, a sharp clinking sound of glass against glass suddenly rang out nearby.

A plate of food had already been placed before her. Turning her head, she saw a palace servant standing there.

Judging by the servant’s deeply dissatisfied expression, it seemed they’d deliberately set the plate down forcefully.

“Eat.”

Leaving only those words—as if they’d never intended to show any courtesy from the start—the servant abruptly disappeared.

Unfazed, Ivenel picked up her utensils.

“Perhaps I should just be grateful I’m not going hungry.”

Arguing would only hurt her own mouth; eating was clearly the better choice.

Yet beyond the dining hall doors, resentful eyes watched her closely.

Male lead is a Love-Obsessed Merman

When he discovers she has gone, he risks everything to pursue her on land, enduring agonizing pain to transform his tail into human legs…

One-line summary: Male lead chases female lead. The male lead’s love is a bit sick, an invincible love brain.

Synopsis

During a voyage at sea, Jiang Yang accidentally captures a merman.

Servant: I heard that mermen are fierce and brutal.

Jiang Yang looks at the merman obediently rubbing her palm like a puppy: “You call this fierce and brutal?”

Servant: I heard that mermen have no human nature.

Jiang Yang looks at the merman with wet puppy eyes, obsessively calling her ‘A Yang’ like a childish infant: “You call this having no human nature?”

With great difficulty, she releases the merman back into the sea and returns to shore.

Who would have thought that in less than half a month, the merman, who should have been freely wandering in the South China Sea, would shed his scales, endure the pain of losing his tail, transform into human legs, and come ashore to find her?

He kneels at her feet, rubbing her palm, with merman tears rolling down: “A Yang, don’t abandon me.”
