Then a shadow crossed her face. Shuher, who had somehow come there, was looking down at the two from his high position.
Even while collapsed, a gun was still held in Evenel’s hand, as if it were a lifeline.
Then Demil came up to him.
“The bullet hit the core accurately.”
“Of course it did.”
Muttering some unintelligible words, Shuher suddenly picked her up in his arms and turned to the seated audience.
“The game is over. Everyone go home.”
With that, he disappeared into the entrance with Evenel in his arms. Those present were confused about what had happened in such a short time.
(This is a time separator.)
After finishing all the Olympic schedules and returning home, Arang quickly finished a short press conference and left the airport. Then she looked for Aran, who should be coming to meet her.
‘I want to see her soon.’
After such a big competition, she always came to the airport, arms open in congratulation.
Since losing her parents in an accident at a young age, Aran had been Arang’s only family. Because she had a younger sister who believed in her more than anyone and supported her, she was able to come this far.
Aran’s existence itself was the driving force to move forward.
“Sister!”
Then Aran was seen on the other side of the crosswalk far away. As soon as she saw her, she waved her hand in delight.
“Sister, wait. I’ll come to you.”
“Okay.”
The crosswalk light turned green, and at the moment Aran crossed the road, a car that for some reason did not slow down came racing.
And without a chance to do anything, it struck defenseless Aran.
The whole scene was etched in Arang’s eyes. Her sister collapsing powerlessly, and pouring out an enormous amount of blood.
“Ah, Aran!”
Arang quickly rushed over and picked up her sister, but she only hung limp.
She called Aran’s name in a sobbing voice several times, but there was no answer.
Frozen in disbelief, Arang let out a scream close to a wail.
Every night after sending off her sister, Arang blamed herself alone.
If only she hadn’t come to see her that day, or if she hadn’t started shooting in the first place, Aran wouldn’t have died.
With that scene, Evenel’s eyes snapped open as she lay in bed.
‘I haven’t dreamed this dream for quite a while.’
Staring blankly at the white ceiling, then quickly getting up as the events before she collapsed played back like a filmstrip.
Then, for no reason, she clenched and unclenched her hand. If this isn’t a dream now.
“Am I really alive?”
“You must have wanted to die pretty badly.”
Suddenly hearing a voice, she turned her head, and there was Shuher, leaning against the wall as if he had been there all along. He approached nonchalantly and naturally sat on Evenel’s bed.
“There are no specific injuries.”
Up close, he seemed taller and more imposing than she thought, his presence more directly intimidating.
He was a man overflowing with the aura of an emperor, as if to say that this is what an emperor should be. Especially his inscrutable black eyes felt familiar, yet highly alien.
‘Wait, then what about Lia?’
To her, Lia’s whereabouts were more important than anything else at the moment.
“Lia, is Lia okay?”
“This isn’t the time to be worrying about a mere maid.”
“Nothing is more important to me right now. Where is Lia?”
Evenel stood up from her seat, intending to go and find Lia herself if he wouldn’t tell her.
With a look in her eyes that seemed ready to pounce if anything had happened to Lia, Shuher hesitated before speaking in a relaxed voice.
“She is injured, but it’s not lifethreatening. She’s waiting in another room right now.”
“Are you sure?”
“I killed her; I have no reason to lie about it.”
His words didn’t feel false, so Evenel’s legs gave way, and she collapsed onto the bed. Only then did she feel relieved, knowing that Lia was alright.
Shuher couldn’t understand her actions at all. Not just now, but even in a situation where he himself could have lived, her recklessness in protecting a mere maid.
“To get this excited over just a maid.”
“Don’t say it’s just. She came with me this far, risking her life to protect me. You have no right to say that.”
“Is she really the grace of the Istella Duke’s family?”
Shuher finally said this, unable to understand the situation otherwise.
Evenel turned her head to meet his blatant gaze, as if trying to recognize who she was.
“Who else could I be if not Evenel? Since it was decided to go to Cariestro, I’ve almost been imprisoned. If you don’t believe me, check for yourself.”
It wouldn’t be beneficial for her to be known as someone other than Evenel. This place was like being in the midst of enemy territory.
‘But why has he been staring at me like that since earlier?’
His piercing gaze was quite burdensome, so she turned her head to the side. But Shuher, not allowing it, grabbed her head and forcibly made her look at him.
With his harsh gesture and strength, Evenel’s gaze met his from close range.
Male lead fell into her trap — and shattered when she walked away
This is also on my reread list!
This one is a slow burn, but when it burns, it burns hard.
Definitely worth a read, y’all!
The story follows a thousand-year-old seductive spirit who, on a bet, sets out to charm the male lead—a once-promising but unfortunate cultivator.
But just when she succeeds in making him fall for her, she heartlessly leaves, driving him to madness.
Determined to find her at all costs, he captures her, keeping her by his side no matter what, even if she hates him.
I love this kind of trope—I enjoy watching the male lead suffer in agony.
The ending drags a bit with unnecessary filler, but that’s fine.
As long as I enjoy the beginning, I’m good.
