A few days later, Joo Won took a break during lunch to visit Shaman Hae In.

“Did you find the personal effects?”

Seeing Joo Won’s brighter expression, Shaman Hae In raised an eyebrow. Joo Won calmly shook his head.

“No. I couldn’t find them.”

He had gone out of his way to visit her amid his busy schedule because he wanted confirmation that his nightmare problem was truly resolved. Thanks to Hye Ju, he’d slept soundly all week—but he still wasn’t sure whether the vengeful spirit had actually disappeared.

Shaman Hae In’s reply was blunt.

“If you haven’t found the personal effects, then nothing’s been solved! It seems you’ve just resorted to tricks to get a few good nights’ sleep—but it’s far too soon to feel relieved!”

It was the answer he’d expected, yet hearing it left him disoriented.

Joo Won lowered his eyes and explained the past week he’d spent with Hye Ju. When he’d embraced Hye Ju, thinking it might be their last moment together, the vengeful spirit hadn’t appeared at all. At this, Shaman Hae In shook her head heavily.

“You think that woman has become your protective charm? No, that’s impossible. The spirit attached to you isn’t an ordinary ghost. Normally, vengeful spirits retreat after rituals or protective talismans are used. It’s also commonly said that being with someone strong in spirit prevents you from seeing ghosts—that logic holds true. But the spirit clinging to you is different from typical vengeful ghosts who seek you out on their own.”

Shaman Hae In closed her eyes and rolled her prayer beads.

“Hye Rim’s spirit is bound through a medium. It didn’t come to you by its own free will! In other words, unless you find that mediating personal effect, you’ve accomplished nothing! Any current improvement is merely temporary.”

Joo Won’s chest sank heavily. Coming here with a glimmer of hope only to receive such definitive confirmation left him utterly despondent.

If they weren’t even at home despite turning the place upside down, where else could he possibly look?
