Sunday morning.

Joo Won was running on the treadmill, drenched in sweat. He’d come straight down to the gym attached to his officetel as soon as he woke up, and had already been exercising for two hours.

He’d lifted heavier weights than usual and run farther than his typical distance, yet he still had energy to spare.

Yesterday, he’d spent six hours just in the gym. Though he wasn’t an athlete, he was working out like a madman—all to exhaust himself completely.

Some people drank alcohol to pass out without thinking, but Joo Won had chosen exercise instead.

“I’ll have to run for at least two more hours.”

Glancing briefly at the smartwatch on his wrist, he sped up.

He’d always been obsessive about exercise, but pushing himself this hard was all because of Hye Ju.

Lying down made him think of her. Sitting down made him think of her. Even going to the convenience store in front of his building brought her to mind. His head was so full of Hye Ju that it gave him a headache. The only way to clear his overheated mind, even briefly, was to punish his body.

“Damn it. At twenty-eight years old, is this really my storm-and-stress period?”

He was finally going through an identity crisis—the kind he’d never experienced even during his teenage years.

This feeling—desperately curious, desperately wanting to see her, desperately wanting to have her—was entirely unfamiliar to Joo Won. It was an emotion he hadn’t felt since breaking up with Hye Rim back in high school and leaving for studies abroad at twenty.

“Mom’s going to lose it if she finds out. If she learns both her sons are pining over women like this…”

Joo Won gave a bitter smile.

To Madam Seon Woo Yeon, her two sons were both her sore thumb and her pride and joy. Hard as it might be to believe, Joo Won was the sore thumb.
