Boss, Our Promise was Different (Completed Main Story) - Chapter 6
I finally said it.
The words I’d agonized over thousands of times all weekend—whether to say them or not.
Do Hyuk raised one eyebrow. He stared intently at Jae In, then rested his chin in his hand, lost in thought.
An agonizing silence stretched on, each second feeling like a full minute.
At last, he opened his mouth with a stern expression.
“That won’t work.”
Jae In, who’d secretly hoped Do Hyuk would accept, was left speechless by his unexpected response.
“Why, why not?”
“The HR team has probably already contacted a headhunting agency with a job request.”
“They did it already? I only mentioned it on Friday!”
“I normally would’ve posted a public job listing, but since Assistant Manager Seo seemed eager to leave as soon as possible, I expedited it—especially for you.”
Wow, our team leader sure is impatient.
Jae In clung to her resolve to escape and forced a calm smile.
‘Now I absolutely have to get that scholarship. What if I said, ‘Please help me—it’s practically saving someone’s life’?’
But with his personality, that approach would clearly be useless.
‘He’s probably still really mad about what happened last time—that’s why he’s acting like this.’
No need to even ask.
If you had a conscience, you’d think about what you did back then.
『I’m quitting soon anyway, so go ahead and worry yourself sick, Team Leader.』
『Well, I don’t believe you’re that petty.』
『Because of you, Team Leader, I feel like I won’t live out my natural life.』
『She grabbed Team Leader Cha Do Hyuk by the collar and quit on the spot.』
『That’s overstepping your authority. Be careful, Mr. Cha Do Hyuk.』
I should’ve been gentler.
At the very least, I shouldn’t have used his name.
I really went all out saying I’d quit.
Seo Jae In, don’t you know anything about a graceful exit?
No matter how much she writhed in belated regret, the milk was already spilled.
Jae In clenched her molars tightly.
Alright, it’s time to fix this mess—starting now.
She leaned forward, placing both hands on the desk, bringing her face just a handspan away from Do Hyuk’s.
“Team Leader, I know your secret. Aren’t you worried?”
“Should I be worried?”
Do Hyuk asked back with an indifferent expression.
Startled, Jae In blinked blankly for a moment before snapping back to her senses.
“You’re not worried at all?”
“Not even a bit.”
“Why not?”
At Jae In’s question, heavy with concern, the corner of Do Hyuk’s mouth twitched slightly.
“Didn’t Assistant Manager Seo personally say you’re not a spy? And that you’d keep my secret?”
“But—but just because I say I’m not, you’re really going to believe me that easily?”
“Yes. I’ve decided to trust Assistant Manager Seo’s word.”
“Wow, you’re way too naive! What if you get betrayed by the very person you trust?”
For an instant, Do Hyuk’s eyes flashed sharply.
Jae In flinched and quickly stepped back.
“I—I’m not saying I’m a spy or anything!”
Do Hyuk stared firmly at Jae In and spoke softly.
“If Assistant Manager Seo really is a spy, and word gets back to them that I’m planning something—ruining everything…”
“…If it gets ruined?”
“Then I’ve decided to be petty about it. I’ll chase you to the ends of the earth.”
As if that were some grand declaration.
For the first time ever, a full-blown smile bloomed on Do Hyuk’s face.
Watching his smile, Jae In felt the hairs on her neck stand on end.
This was clearly a threat—a warning that if she dared speak out, she’d see hell itself.
And with Cha Do Hyuk, it wasn’t just an empty scare tactic—he’d carry it out a million times over without hesitation.
A red alert blared loudly in Jae In’s ears.
‘I can’t just sit here and take this. I have to find a way out!’
First, I’ll try persuasion.
“Team Leader, didn’t you say you’d only be recognized as successor if the Diet Line project succeeds? Then you need my help, right?”
“Don’t worry about that. Now that I think about it, one less Assistant Manager Seo probably isn’t a big deal.”
“But—but Section Chief Ko isn’t even here anymore! Without me too, won’t that put you in a tough spot?”
“HR recommended a suitable candidate for Section Chief Ko’s position, and we’ve scheduled an interview for today.”
“That fast?”
Why was HR, which had always prided itself on caution and moved at a snail’s pace, suddenly operating at light speed—of all times, now?
“Apparently Section Chief Ko has some conscience after all and agreed to provide remote support. So Assistant Manager Seo, please ensure a smooth handover to avoid any work disruptions.”
“Um, Team Leader…?”
“Well then, I’ve said what I needed to. You may go now.”
Faced with Do Hyuk’s impenetrable attitude, Jae In’s stubbornness flared up.
“Wait! Team Leader, you’re making a hasty and wrong decision right now.”
“A wrong decision?”
Do Hyuk’s eyes narrowed.
“A project doesn’t just run because you fill the headcount. It takes time for someone new to adjust—and we only have two months left until the shareholders’ meeting!”
“So?”
“I can guarantee success! That’s why you have to keep me!”
Did I really just say that?
Inside, Jae In winced. She’d shouted it in desperation, but that was the biggest bluff of all bluffs.
But the words were already out. Now she had no choice but to push forward and deal with the consequences later.
“Team Leader, think this through carefully—you shouldn’t create a situation you’ll regret later.”
“Hmm.”
Do Hyuk lowered his gaze, seemingly lost in thought.
Great. It seems my persuasion is working.
Jae In quickly pressed her advantage.
“And the thing you’re secretly planning—it absolutely can’t reach Chairman Cha’s ears, right?”
“Correct.”
“And it’s an extremely sensitive matter—one misstep could be disastrous, right?”
“Exactly.”
“Then why risk it by trusting me carelessly? What if I slip up and say something?”
“That’s a good point.”
“Sticking close and watching me, just like you first suggested, is clearly the safest approach.”
“Is it?”
“Of course! You’d feel uneasy if someone suspicious disappeared from your sight, wouldn’t you?”
“Hmm. Now that Assistant Manager Seo mentions it, I suddenly do feel uneasy.”
He’s taking the bait!
Inside, Jae In cheered in triumph.
“Right? You feel uneasy, right?”
“You might really be a spy—so I’ll have to watch you closely and thoroughly.”
“Of course you should! For safety’s sake!”
“Well, if Seo Jae In is so adamant about it, I suppose I have no choice. Just as I originally proposed, you’ll stay at my house together with me until the shareholders’ meeting ends. If you successfully complete the project by then and prove you’re not a spy, I’ll make sure you get the scholarship.”
“Great!”
Thrilled by the word “scholarship,” Jae In answered loudly.
Instantly, a triumphant smile appeared on Do Hyuk’s lips—as if he’d been waiting for this exact moment.
Wait a second.
Something feels really off. Extremely off.
“Team Leader, why did you suddenly drop your honorifics? Calling me by name now…”
He’d done the same last time when he cornered me.
A terrible foreboding swept over Jae In—like she’d just made a catastrophic mistake.
Do Hyuk, lounging deeply in his chair, spoke in a chilling tone.
“Why should I use honorifics with a spy?”
“I told you—I’m not a spy!”
“Didn’t you just tell me yourself not to trust carelessly—and that I should stick close to monitor you for safety?”
Do Hyuk looked at Jae In with a mocking glint in his eyes.
In that instant, Jae In realized—she’d walked straight into his trap.
It felt as if she’d been struck hard on the head with a hammer, leaving her dazed.
To sum it up:
Driven solely by her desire for the scholarship, Jae In had scolded Do Hyuk for being naive in trusting her—and then passionately convinced him to doubt and restrict her instead.
What an idiot.
She should’ve hung a banner saying “NOT A SPY” just to be safe.
Even though Do Hyuk was willing to let it go, she’d snatched the shovel and dug her own grave.
‘I should’ve just done it yesterday.’
There’s a world of difference between walking in by choice and begging your way in.
And of course, it was painfully obvious her treatment from Do Hyuk going forward would change drastically.
Remembering how confidently she’d confronted Do Hyuk last time, Jae In suddenly felt like bursting into tears.
Out of sheer embarrassment.
So this is what they mean by “giving a peck and getting a pound in return.” Lately, I’ve been living out proverbs firsthand left and right.
For no good reason.
“Seo Jae In, you look pale—are you okay?”
“…….”
“If standing is hard, why don’t you sit on the sofa?”
Ugh, the cat thinking about the mouse… Argh, how annoying!
At that moment, Do Hyuk abruptly stood up and strode past Jae In to sit on the sofa.
Jae In’s heart sank, as if her inner thoughts had been exposed.
“We need to review the contract terms—come sit over here.”
“……Yes.”
Resigned, Jae In sat down on the sofa, and Do Hyuk handed her a contract densely filled with text.
“Team Leader, when did you prepare this?”
“Yesterday. I had a feeling Seo Jae In would come back on your own.”
“What? But you said HR had already started recruitment—you even mentioned expediting it especially…”
“You actually believed that? How naive.”
Do Hyuk gave a faint smile, throwing her own words right back at her.
She’d been completely outmaneuvered.
Remembering what she’d just said moments ago, Jae In’s face burned with shame.
“What would you have done if I hadn’t come back?”
“Then I would’ve steeled myself to chase Seo Jae In pettily to the ends of the earth.”
A sudden chill ran through Jae In, making her shiver all over.
Even on second hearing, it was a bone-chilling threat—and all the scarier because she knew he meant every word.
But she had no time to dwell on fear—there was something she needed to do immediately.
She carefully scrutinized the contract, checking for any suspicious clauses.
The key terms were:
1. Seo Jae In shall remain silent regarding all matters related to this agreement.
2. Seo Jae In shall reside at Cha Do Hyuk’s residence and assist with the project until the shareholders’ meeting concludes. As this is part of her official duties, she will receive overtime pay.
3. If Seo Jae In successfully completes the project before the shareholders’ meeting, she will be guaranteed a full scholarship to the Japanese Confectionery & Baking School. Payment will be processed within one week after the meeting ends.
There was one additional unusual clause:
“No dating members of the opposite sex during the contract period? What’s this about?”
“Isn’t that obvious? It’s for security.”
“It’s absurd. You’ll be glued to me 24/7—who would I even date?”
If I don’t collapse from overwork, I’ll be lucky.
Still, it’s kind of him to at least include overtime pay—how thoughtful.
Seeing Jae In’s exasperated expression, Do Hyuk curled the corner of his mouth slightly.
“Be careful—if you violate even one clause, the contract becomes void immediately.”
“Yes, I understand.”
“Let’s move in tomorrow. You can take tomorrow off.”
“Tomorrow?”
Jae In’s eyes widened at the word “tomorrow.”
“Is there a problem?”
“Ah, no, not at all.”
“Just bring a few sets of clothes. There’s no space for other furniture anyway.”
“……Yes.”
She’d avoided Do Hyuk at work because of their awkwardness, and now, starting tomorrow, she’d be stuck with him at home too.
Though Jae In had gotten the chance she wanted—the scholarship opportunity—now that it was actually happening, she felt strangely uneasy.
To make matters worse, Shin Ae’s dismissed comment—“I thought the team leader was interested in you”—was now weighing heavily on her mind.
Thinking it over again still felt ridiculous, but as the saying goes, “Tap the stone bridge before crossing.”
‘Yeah, better make sure.’
Jae In cautiously gauged Do Hyuk’s expression before asking timidly,
“Um… Team Leader, can I add just one more clause to the contract?”
When yandere male lead believes she loves him — but she never did
“How dare you!”
“How dare you make me love you, only to cast me aside as nothing more than a friend?!?
“I will never accept that.”
“I will never let you return to him.”
“Even if I have to burn myself to ashes.”
“Even if I must shatter my purity, my dignity, my very soul.”
“I will never let you escape me!”
This was the first novel that introduced me to the matriarchal genre. I’ve read it three times already!
At first, the male lead despised the female lead. Later, he misunderstood that she liked him, so he condescendingly and reluctantly reciprocated her feelings.
Then, he suddenly discovered that she was kind to everyone in the same way, and there was already someone she cherished in her heart, and that person was not him.
The male lead couldn’t believe it, he became angry and crazy. He was determined to capture her body and heart by any means necessary.
Synopsis:
Want to see how a green tea bitch male lead falls in love with the female lead?
Want to see how he flirtatiously pursues the female lead?
Want to see how he gets slapped in the face repeatedly?
The male lead is a green tea bitch, a poisonous lotus, jealous, ruthless, unscrupulous, with a venomous heart, and he’s also a delusional maniac.
