Whitney couldn’t believe her eyes.

“What on earth is this…!”

Fury boiled over at the absurd newspaper article. Judging solely by the photograph, it truly looked as if the Marquis was clinging desperately to her.

Worse still, the angle of the photo was deliberately crafted to make it obvious who was seated in the carriage.

‘I had a bad feeling about this—and sure enough!’

She’d had a hunch that getting entangled with him would lead to trouble. Whitney now regretted sending that letter. Though she’d written another one since, she knew it was already too late to fix anything.

At least Chester had sent word that he would accompany her, which offered some small comfort.

“It seems we’ve walked straight into a trap.”

“I’m sorry. I should have investigated more thoroughly.”

“No, it’s fine. They were bound to make contact one way or another anyway. We might as well meet and hear what they have to say.”

The rumors had likely already spread. Regardless of how distorted they’d become, they certainly weren’t painting her in a favorable light.

“We’re set to meet this afternoon, so we’ll find out soon enough. His Highness will arrive beforehand—please show him in through a separate entrance.”

“Yes, I’ll have him slip in through the back door.”

Whitney nodded. She had no intention of revealing Chester’s presence; she wanted to figure out the Marquis’s true intentions on her own.

If he merely discussed business and left, there’d be no issue—but if not, Chester might need to intervene.
